FINISHED PROJECT!!!

Pictures at #23

Hai there,
i have a question about the nuts and bolts about my new BK-17. Awesome knife!
I want to install Stainless hardware that fits kydex liners. A pain in the A to get any inch size fasteners in metric country. Let alone specific sizes. Im looking for the right size of the standard bolts/nuts and some with added length.

Becker data base: Fastener: #8-32x1/2”L* Nut: #8-32
What tread is on the standard factory Kabar fasteners; UNC, UNF or ???

So with extra thickness from the two lines, 3mm (1/8 inch) …that makes the bolts: #8-32x 5/8 L right?

Clear view on my nuts: #8-32. Nyloc if flush with handles.

What is a standard bolt size for a 5/8 length?…so what do I have to order from a specialized vendor? ;)

Sounds like you got it. 5/8" will be the right length with liners, IF you can find them. Kinda hard to find that length unless you go to a specialty fastener place. I just got 3/4" length bolts and cut them down in size.

So bolt # 8-32 (1/4) x 5/8''L would be ideal, and bolt # 8-32 (1/4) x 3/4''L a more common available option.

The extra length might not even bother me, especially in combination with nyloc's. Cutting them down is a option rather avoided. Probably end up by a specialist in fastener's anyway.

you could also try an m4 it is the same diameter and would be easier for you to find. Unc or unf it is a standard thread so if it say 8-32 its the right one i dont know of any other size 8 thread counts.

Unc is course thread and unf is fine thread and for a larger diameter bolt i know which is which like 1/4-20 is unc and 1/4-28 is unf 1/4-28 being a specialty bolt very hard to find even in the us.

My initial though is to work with Metric ;) Way easier to deal with numbers over fraction… and what I’m used to. But metric doesn’t work in this case.

M4 has the proper width (4mm) to fit the holes in the handle. But the M4 nuts are way to small. Even M5 nuts spin in nut-slots of the standard Tweener handle scales. M6 nuts work while they don’t fit nicely….Drilling the holes to fit M6 (6mm) would mean removing around 2mm of metal were I like to keep it.

I encountered this same ‘’problem‘’ with stainless hardware for a large Becker's…history repeats itself.

You could get larger ones and then just cut them to the right size, make your own custom hardware, I've been making my own since forever.

Man should have done this last month i coulda shipped you any size you want but i no longer work at the hardware store its closing so i got transfered.

One more thing to add. Metric may be different, but I never found nylon lock nuts that fit on the tweener scales without being proud and causing hot spots. Could never find any "low profile" locking nuts. No problems on the big Beckers, just the tweeners.

That said - if anyone has found some nylon locking nuts that are flush or recessed to the scales, please let me know :p

Luckily you kept your job. Thanks for the offer anyway!

Heh heh you said nut sluts.

Hmmmm google showed me what's funny. I meant nut-slOts...those HOLES in the SCALES to fit the nuts in. Whatever the proper English word is.

Glad no pics were included here...

I'll post pics when they are attached to the knife... ;)

Use the tiniest drop of blue thread lock the blue is removable and red is usually permanant and needs a torch to remove. A small drop of blue will keep them in place and will be removable if need be. All lock nuts i have ever seen are the same shape never seen a lock nut the same size as a reg nut.

Blue thread lock preferred over lock nuts. The Tweeners don't see the vibration of the larger Beckers and, as stated, the dab of blue will more than suffice.

There are some low profile lock nuts....but they're a special order deal. The center bolt will take a Nylock nut, but the butt and hilt will need standard if they aren't to stand proud. 5/8" will be a little long, even with liners - the stock ones are ½" (I just measured them). ¾" will definitely need to be ground down or they'll cause you some grief. Here's a pic of the 5/8" with Micarta and thin liners. They stand proud of the nuts, but not the scales....

Good luck. And message me (email from my avatar) if you can't get them. I've got some extras, if you don't mind waiting for snail mail.

Uncoated, liners and Micarta is a nice combo! I'm planning to use the standard brown handles and red kydex liners. Thanks for the offer Granitestateofmind!

There a local Harley shop that carries them. Stainless hexagonal socket screw 8/32 x 5/8 inch…..at a ridicules 0,75Euro a peace!!! Guess I fall victim to the rules of supply and demand ;)

McMaster Carr has a complete selection in Black Oxide, Stainless, Alloy and plastic among others. Every Ace hardware I've been in has them also...they only have the sizes up to about an inch or so. Every Remington 870 buttstock bolt/reciever is 1/4-28.

Materials check, tools check, attitude check.....Ready to at the stainless hardware and create liners!
