Question.. BK2 Micarta scales

Just installed a set of green micarta scales from Tomars Kabar on one of my Kabar BK2's.

I noticed the screw ends do not fully pass through the nuts. They only tighten up about halfway through. I am certain the nuts are fully seated in the scales. The screws were fully through the factory grivory scales and flush with the nut tops.

It appears they are securely fastened, but I'm just wondering if any of you other M scale owners noticed this on your installations.

They sure improve the look, feel, and handling of the knife.

Thanks all,
cutterman

I got some of the micarta for a BK2, but decided to stick them on a BK9 instead.

On the BK9, the screw just barely makes it all of the way through the nut. So since the BK2 is thicker stock, I can see how the screw would not go all of the way through.

Those nuts are jammed in the micarta so tight, and the lockup on those screws is so solid that really doubt that there will be any issue keeping that micarta locked on tight to the BK2. But since the BK2 is thicker, I can see how the screw would not go all of the way through the nut.

Thanks powernoodle. Your right. I'm not worried about those scales going anywhere. You are also right about the blade thickness on the KaBar BK2's. Mine are a full 1/4" thick and will not fit in my Survival Systems kydex sheath made for my old Camillus BK2 which is only about 3/16th thick.

Thanks,

If you are interested, get for yourself a kydex belt sheath for that BK2 from Eric at On/Scene tactical. $38 shipped, and 100% quality in every respect.

Note -- regarding installing the micarta scles on the original Becker BK2 made by Blackjack Knives.

1. You will need to take a screwdriver and hammer and pound the nuts out of the original grips to remove them.

2. The screws ARE NOT long enough to properly seat. I am going to go to the hardware store and try to buy some slightly longer screws.

Get the stainless steel screws it will be worth it.

Thank you for the advice CRKS.

For the historical purposes in case anyone searches for this in the future:

Today I went to Lowe's and acquired stainless steel Socket Head Cap Screws size 10-24 x 3/4 and they fit perfectly.

If you own an original Blackjack Becker BK2 you will need to purchase these screws as well as punch the original nuts out of the original handle using a hammer and a screwdriver to install the new micarta handle slabs.

The micarta slabs are outstanding! It's like I purchased a brand new knife for just the price of the screws -- a whoping $1.33!

Don't forget a bit of locktight on the new screws. That will keep them secure. :D

I had to use a punch to seat the nuts deep enough in the micarta scales for my BK2 and BK9.I dig the micarta scales alot!

Guys,

We made the openings for the retaining nuts on the micarta handles tight so that the nuts would not fall out. A punch, screw driver or metal rod will help set them in the opening.
Loc-tite is a good thing on the screw threads. Blue; if you plan on removing the screws. Red; if you want them tightened permanantly.
It seems you guys have figured this out but I'll offer some validation from the factory.

eek - wrong tools for removing those nuts ...

use take the isolated slab, thread a screw in from the tang/smooth side, and then use hand pressure and a gentle rocking motion (on a board or other hard surface) against the screw. they pop right out.

course, if you do that frequently with the micarta, you're likely to damage it over time. i'd suggest having a supply of the nuts and screws. leave the nuts in place, esp if you are prone to swapping handles.

which reminds me, i probably SHOULD buy more stainless hardware :>

This is all really good info. I wish I had checked here first. I got some custom-made micarta slabs, and they aren't shaped exactly right, so they're a little uncomfortable. I didn't realize then that the Tomar-sold handles were made by Ka-Bar. Time to try again.

I have been getting different measures for the becker screws, some say 10-32 5/8 others 10-24 5/8 and now i see 10-24 3/4 , I have a becker bk2 with micarta scales....which one will fit becuase regretfully on my town it has been imposible to get those screws so I will have to order them online and I do not want to miss the right measure

thanks

Weird, I just put my micarta scales on today and the stock BK-2 bolts fit perfectly, the top of the bolt is flush with the top of the nut.

I could be wrong here, but I think 10-24, 10-32 refers to thread size. And the stock bolts are 5/8" long. So I you get thicker slabs, especially on a BK2 you'll need to go up to 3/4" long bolts. If you're ordering online, I'd go longer and if you need to, cut them to size with a hacksaw.
