Question.. BK2 Micarta scales

Hi All,

Just a heads up to warn against using stainless steel fasteners to secure handles to a high-carbon steel blade/tang. Use carbon steel fasteners with carbon steel blades and use stainless steel fasteners with stainless steel blades.

Although the stainless steel fasteners (socket head cap screw and nut) will themselves resist rust, if they touch the carbon steel they will accelerate rust of the carbon steel. This is because they are dissimilar metals--the issue is greatly exacerbated if they come into contact with water.

If you are tempted to use stainless fasteners because you are worried about the nut and bolt (SHCS) potentially rust-welding themselves together, then use a brass nut with the carbon bolt; they will not rust together.

See link to galvanic chart.

Thanks for the heads up, but I'll stick with stainless in my micarta scales. Looks much better, and I'm not really worried about rust.

Not really a problem for the blades that are still coated in that region. Easy enough fix if they aren't, just a little clear nail polish should do it, or some poly if you feel saucy, or if you were super duper worried you could slap some heat shrink in the inbetween area and leave it at that. Overall, not a real big issue.
