Question Concerning Grizzly 2"X72"

Thanks to both of you for your response so early in the morning!!!:yawn::yawn:

The grizzly will occaisionally have belts come off when slack belt grinding, and trying to do sharp plunges on the edge of the platen doesn't work well

Page you have a Grizzly? Check your tension, maybe the crowning on drive wheel is wore. I have never had a belt come off. I have run hundreds of belts on mine. I done plunges on my platen and done convex grind on my slack.

If you are having problems with tracking or throwing belts it's probably a lack of belt tension. The tension spring on the Grizzly isn't sufficient to apply enough tension to the belt. Tighten the belt enough to compress the spring completely and you shouldn't have any more problems.

The way that I got around the hollow grinding problem on the Grizzly was to remove the platen and to mount a third wheel in it's place. I ordered a Bader wheel (I hollow grind on a 14" wheel) w/axle and bearing and made a mounting bracket from a piece of 2" center bored rod welded to a piece of
1/4" x 2" bar with mounting holes to match those on the platen. Works wonderfully and only takes a couple of minutes to switch it out.

Could you post a picture of your third wheel set up? It sounds interesting but I just can't picture it in my head.

I never had problem with hollow grinds. Not even with the 8' wheel. You had develop a system of pull knife away from the motor as you ground. But it wasn't a problem. The 10'' wheel fixed that completely unless you are dead set on doing 14" inch grinds.

Thanks Magnussen,

There was a guy I found on Knifeforums.com, Greg Brannon who used to have a MSN group that detailed a mod around the hollow grinding issue for the Grizzly G1015, but it's gone now and I haven't been able to find anything else like it. Has anyone else seen that before and maybe downloaded it or found another site that is still detailing it?

Thanks Everyone,

Jeff

I've had my grizzly for about 3 years now. Now I will say this it does have its quirks. However it is a very versatile machine once you know how to work with it.

I can hollow grind either direction with the 8 inch wheel as long as the knife is under 6 inches (blade lenght). Anything larger requires me to switch to the 10 inch wheel. Realistically this isn't as bad as it seems as the longer the blade the wider it ussually is hence the larger radius on the 10 inch wheel looks better IMO.

My main issue with mine has more to do with placement on my bench. Didn't plan things out very well on either the placement of my grinder or my vise, and have been to lazy to move them over the past several years.

The grinder works best if on a stand or on the end of the bench with the belt past the edge of the table/bench. With the way that I have it set up I have little to no clearance for grinding the back of longer blades. The only reason I haven't moved things yet is almost everything I do is 10" OAL or less. So its not a big deal.

This grinder will chew through HR1095 without batting an eyelash when using the blaze or hogger belts from Norton. I've used other brand belts on this grinder and it is like a completely different machine. I was really amazed at the performance capabilities of the grizzly once I got around to getting decent belts for it.
