Been getting ready to get a farmer after seeing all the love it gets here. Wondering about the steel of the knife blade. Is it good? Stay sharp? Easy-ish to sharpen back up? So, in addition to the handiness of saw, opener, awl, etc. will I be happy with the blade?

The same stuff that Victorianox always uses. they call it INOX. It's not great. But they use it for everything, and know its limitations. Its VERY stain resistant, gets scary sharp easily, but is on the soft side and doesn't hold its edge very well. It's certainly a capable enough steel, I don't know what else you would expect from that kind of knife and price point. certainly not your super steel, but it does a fine job of separating matter.

I really like the stainless steel blades used on Swiss Army Knives. Not the hardest or strongest, but it cuts and slices great due to the slender blade profile. Relatively easy to sharpen, and holds an edge about average.

It may be softer steel, but I really like my saks, they hold and edge for quite awhile in my opinion, especially on wood etc. And they don't take much work at all to get sharp again, a couple passes on a fine ceramic rod or loaded stop and they shave again! I've carved a lot with them and made tons of fuzz sticks, cleaned fish and game with them, cut up piles of cardboard, and I like that if U do something stupid with them, (over torq a screw driver, baton a little to carelessly, yea Ive batoned a sak lol!) The steel will generally flex or bend before it snaps. No its not a super steel, but It works for me, I don't mind 5 minutes every week or two to sharpen them!

I can't imagine using a SAK to baton, forgive me. Of course, I know not everything, and could certainly be misinformed.

All in all though, Swissers are remarkably sharp and will stay that way even when exposed to moisture and humidity. I have never abused a Swisser to the point where the blade fails, but I have run a few SAK blades through the paces and have found they prevail in almost any environmental scenario and hold stength under most common implementations. In other words, very nice blades.
