Question for all you minimalizers (and no, I don't mean minimalists).

Ok, so I have all these knives. CV Pen knife. CV Soddie Jr. CV Mini-trapper. Buck Cadet 303. Case SS Soddie Jr. Bone Stag SS Peanut. SAK Cadet and SI. I have a few more. I HATE the fact that they just sit there in the drawer and don't do much. I'm a one knife kind've guy, unlike many here I guess. I like to have one knife and stick with it. My most used knife is my Peanut. I've had issues lately with keeping an edge on it because I use it so much, and have been using the CV Soddie, but that one's edge has to be retouched every night as well, so maybe I'm just going to have to get used to a little nightly maintenance on an edge and go back to my Peanut (which I honestly feel strange not carrying). Anyway, I don't use my other knives. EVER. I use my two SAKs on occasion, but my others don't see anything other then the inside of the drawer. People at work are always seeing me using my slippie, and are always asking me where they can get one, if I have any spare ones, etc. So my question. Since I don't use them, and really don't plan on it, should I give them away to my friends? They ARE my friends, so I don't want to charge them. However, like I said, I don't use them, and they SHOULD be used. The Peanut stays with me, as do the SAKs. However, as for the others, should I hand them off to someone who can use them?

People sometimes give me used knives that aren't suitable for collecting and I sometimes end up with duplicates. So I pass them on to co-workers or friends instead of adding them to my Accumulation.

As far as my Accumulation, I have hundreds of knives that have never been used, never will be, and will be melted into a blob when I die just so no one else can have them.

That's just the way I am. Don't be like me.

Guru,
The only knife my grandpa owned was a small Case jack knife. He got it new in 1950 and carried it until he died in 2000. I don't know what type knife he carried before that one, some sort of Case. He was a carpenter and used that knife everyday and he used it for everything, fishing, hunting, cleaning squirrels, quail, etc. Only that knife.
My daddy is the same way, as a kid in the seventies, I remember him carrying a Case Trapper. That was the only knife he had. He also had a Buck skinner for deer hunting. But those were the only two knives he had. he gave me that wore out Trapper a couple of years ago, when I bought him a Case Saddlehorn. That's the only knife he has now. He was a carpenter as well, but retired now, used that old Trapper everyday. My brother only carries a Case Trapper as well. And he uses it HARD! He is a welder and that knife sees at alot of use.
Daddy thinks I'm crazy for having so many knives! I don't see him much these days since I live so far away, but he always asks if I got any new knives lately. It's funny, because my father in law loves knives, like myself. He has many, many knives. So, at least I have him to talk to about knives.
But carry what you like and get of the rest if you want, lots of people only have one knife. Or just keep them all for back ups.

I have alot of knives that I have come in to over the years. I carry some but Many of them just sit in drawers. The knives that I don't use and were not given to me by loved ones are all ways up for grabs. I bought most of the others at flea markets or yard sales, or for clearance just to rescue them. I would rather give them to some one that will care for and use them than let them collect dust. It makes me smile for a long time when I introduce youngsters to knives, or give an old timer one that takes them back to their younger days. To me it is more about keeping a tradition alive and sharing with those that need than growing my collection. What you do is up to you, and I am in favor of having a few spares. take care, Joe

Yes, by all means give them away.

A while back I was in the same place, Karen and I were downsizing in our retirement, and both of us were cutting way back on personal possesions. I gathered the kids, nephews, a nieces, friends and co-workers and had a give away. It was great, I loved it! I knew the knives all went to good homes were they will be used, and I had the increadable pleasure of giving to those I cared about while I was still around to see it. I simplified my life and kept only a couple of my favorite old guns, and a couple of everyday using pocket knives. Karen gave alot of stuff to the Salvation Army, and the church. But make sure you get a coin fron any friend who you give a knife to, even if its just a copper penny. It's an old superstition, if you give a knife to a friend and don't receive a coin in return, the gift of the knife will cut the friendship.

If there's a boy scout troop near you, have the scout master hand out your surplus knives to some deserving scouts. I think they still use pocket knives at least. I think.

Theres an old Chinese proverb-Beware of owning too many possesions, as they will soon own you.

It is real satisfying to see someone useing a knife that you have given them. I like giveing away knives almost as much as I like getting them. I say do it you know you will be replacing them with more knives anyways. :)

It's always generous to give away a knife to somebody who appreciates it.

Keep something in reserve though:D

WOW!!. What a great and true confession. "Melted into A BLOB"!! Can we please now call you, 'BOB the MELTING KNIFE BLOB'...?..:D

Ok, so today at work I gave my Buck Cadet 303 to a female co-worker, and had the pleasure of seeing her use it while making enrichment toys for the petting zoo animals. I also gave my SS Soddie Jr. to another coworker, as he was staring and studying it yesterday when I EDCed it. Since he was spellbound by it, I figured it was the one for him. Well, he was really excited. He told me he has a bunch of other (tactical) knives, but none like this. A few hours later, as I was getting ready to wrestle a gator, he comes up to me (he was backing up my show) and says "I put liquid bandaide on a cut your knife gave me." I told him no, it was HIS knife, and it was a cut he gave himself. What happened? He tells me he was admiring the blade and stroking it, not thinking it was as sharp as it was. It was like he'd never seen a truly sharp blade before and didn't know what to do with it. I told him ALL my knives are shaving sharp, and proceeded to pull out my Peanut and shave my arm hair with both blades. He seemed truly amazed. I guess the tacticools like their bknives for their looks, where as we like our knives for looks AND for function. Amazing.

I've given a few away cause I've had some given to me by some good folks here to help me get started. Kind of pass it on. That said though, I have over a hundred knives now, but only a small set in an EDC box. Of those, there are maybe four on top of the box that really get carried, and really only one with an alternate now and then. I also EDC a SAK Classic in my left pocket, but since I use it mainly for the toothpick and the screwdriver, I don't really count it as carrying a knife. At work I have another SAK in my blazer pocket as a backup and also as a tool. I don't use it that often. So the one in my right front pocket is what I consider my EDC knife as that is the one I use for cutlery duty. As I said, that one is usually the same knife every day. On occasion I'll change up just for the sake of it. But, I got back to the same knife before a few days are up.

I enjoy handling and looking at my knives. I doubt I'll ever carry them all. Don't really care too. Some are just there and I enjoy them as much as any, just differently.

Best thing is, do what you feel best. There's joy in giving good folks a knife and seeing how it enriches their life. There's also joy in just enjoying knives in your collection. So, maybe do both. ;)
