We went to 01 for the Next Generation for the added edge holding. As most of the users of this high speed model are very educated in steels, heat treating methodologies, and demand a particular level of performance from their tactical blade-ware, we felt 01 offered the best combination of wear resistance, edge holding, shock resistance, machinablility, and overall toughness in the specificity of a Tomahawk. 01 is nothing new to the industry, as it remains a favorite among many forgers of classic style, as well as tactical blades.
Our blade thickness after the taper down from the eye to the flats falls in at .22 thick stock, so this thing bites like a knife into ANYTHING you touch it to.
As for a hickory handle on the new head, Blade Art will have a special model made just for them with a Next Generation Hammer Pole Hawk Head fitted to a decorative curly maple handle...it will be out in a couple of months.
