Question for Army folks.

I'm tempted to say get him good multi-tool just now and a Busse shop credit for when he gets to his unit and knows the lay of the land.

As far as knife choice goes there are more than a few you could go with and i'm sure he would be happy. If it's for general use then a skinny ASH-1, Hell Razor, SJTAC are all good. I would add that a Yard Keeper is on my webbing at all times, the coating keeps the rust at bay and the Resiprene C handle stays grippy in all weathers. Plus it's not too big and dangerous looking so it doesn't get me unwanted attention.

Here is what my son took with him to Iraq. (The Satin Jack)... Since this knife is not readily available now the Boss Jack is very similar. Good Luck to your son!

Thanks and I'd love to hear the story on this particular pic.

My personal preference after trying most of the Busse range is the Basic 9 .... tucked between my webbing belt and hip pad on a slanted rear carry the rear pouches hide the sheath and the Res C handle is none reflective and unobtrusive making my carrying the knife go unnoticed for the most part. It's light and can be drawn whilst lying prone and has great chopping ability for it's weight. On a choked grip you can still control the point and do fine cutting and the ASM edge makes field sharpening easier than other edge types.

Teamed with my SAK and a diamond hone carried in another pouch it is the best combo I have found for belt use.
