Question for BCCI Members

I've been thinking of joining the BCCI and if I do, I might want to go for the life membership. I could try a one-year and see what I think, but renewal dates always pop up and sometimes get overlooked.

This is a question for members and life members. Could you tell me what you think are the advantages of being a member or life member. If it's not any trouble, could you show some photos of knives you wouldn't have gotten if not for the club. Any disadvantages to being a member? (I can't imagine any, but I want to cover the bases.)

I'm on a cliff top in a hang glider, want to give the push? Thanks in advance.

For me, the main advantage is access to the BCCI website. All the catalogs and price lists from years past as well as all the past BCCI newsletters are there and downloadable. There are also model histories and all kinds of good stuff.

I have a few of the club knife offerings and I'll try to get some pictures posted. Im sure someone else will come along and beat me to that. They have put out some beauties.

I pay my dues annually--never know if I'll be around long enough to cash in on a life membership--but, then I'm old--older, not ancient. To me the biggest advantage is the access to the website and researchable files--history, history, history, and the annual Buck catalog.

Second greatest advantage is the caliber of the folks you'll meet and deal with. Actually, now that I've been a member for a few years, this one is probably, by far, the number one reason, today.

I have never purchased any club knives--most don't really speak to my desires or needs. They're nice, just not "me".

Yup, after thinking about it, it's the people!

In the year 2000 I got a knife that came with a year of membership. To be truthful, I didn't get much out of it. I joined again in 2008 and was able to go to the annual BCCI meeting in Atlanta. It was nice meeting all the neat people. They have everyone introduce themselves at the meeting. I got a lot of neat knives at that meeting, then in 2009 they talked about a special meeting in 2010 at SMKW, which is a lot closer to me than going to Idaho. I became a life time member in 2009.

The web site is nice, but not a lot of activity, but all the knife catalogs all the way back to the late 1940's is really neat.

Here are some knives I bought at the annual meeting.

The middle knife I already had. The bottom one was one of a kind.

I bought these in 2009. Some really great deals. I also met Chuch Buck, Wilde Bill Cody and David Yellowhorse. If you can go to the meetings, it is definately worth it.

Not sure if they are still doing it but they were giving you a 532 with your membership. That is what pushed me over the edge!

I hate doing yearly renewals, life memeber is like 'never having to say your sorry'. Knife discounts is a plus. The details are only what you make or need. Histories, catalogs are really good no matter your classification, the chat room has been slow, but I post stuff there when I do something....I just haven't written any 300 stuff for a few months due to our mothers taking up our free time. Also I realize there are several computer places for knife questions and discussion that overlap this subject. I try to put most things I do in several locations, just so there is more of a chance of helping someone.

Its worth it if to just buy a few new issue knives plus a hidden value. Having Larry learn you name and make note if you have something you want special is good because he handles estate sales that come to him......I have instructions for my wife to call him if the 30-06 isn't enough gun and I am gored by a rampaging bull elephant.....

I remember back when I was making $8,500 a year in salary. The NRA life membership was $150....... boy was I dumb, I remember back then it was popular to wear cowboy boots so I had to have a $150 dollar pair, ostrich I think..........I would of still be using the NRA life membership, the boots - my feet would still hurt walking in them. even if by some miracle they lasted this long...... we make some bad decisions along the path of life don't we......your call.

If you get a BCCI liftime membership you can by Buck Knives through Larry Oden and get them at cost plus (5% life time members or 10% annual members) it is about 60% off retail.. I went 3 years annual and wish I would have just went life time to start it would have saved money. It goes to a good cause so I do not feel to bad. I like the newsletters also.

Here's a quote from Larry's last e-mail to me.

"As a reminder, your cost is Buck's wholesale plus 10% if you are a BCCI
life member. If you are a BCCI annual member, your cost is wholesale
plus 15%. Also, you pay shipping from Idaho to Indiana and from me to
your location."

That is great news on the discount! I wasn't aware of that till now.

Is there a wholesale price list somewhere?

Members get a catalog and a price list. Wholesale is 50% of the suggested retail price in the price list.

Wolf, I like the Club knives and have several . When you can get a knife w/ 14crt. gold etching on the blade, mirror polished and stag handled for 125$ that paid for several annual dues right there . The newsletters are great as well . Getting invited to Chuck Buck's house for lunch and his wife giving your entire family a tour of it, -- I have pictures of my 14yr. old daughter getting a ride in Chuck's 57 Chevy convertable w/ the top down .. Too cool . Heck, half the guys that post on this form I've met and could tell you funny stories about each one (one cut his thumb in the Buck store on a knife when the lady had just said,"watch it their sharp). Except they'd do me the same way ! Whats that worth ? Alot to me . If I go a few days w/o posting because I'm working out of town they e-mail me wondering what up ! Thats worth something to me . Theres too much other stuff real special to me that makes the knives just icing on the cake . DM

I like the fancy limited edition knives. Here are some examples:

On the far right is a Bucklocker in Ironwood and Camel bone, 154cm
This picture is a good study in the different grinds you'll find on a 532 blade.

Wolfdog,
Everyone is hitting the main point's.
It's a neat thing to be a part of at a cheap cost.Sheesh it's like the cost of shooting at the range once..Plus you can make some great connections if you collect. I get email every once in awhile that so and so has a BuckMaster for sale and I jump on it if I need it for my collection...
