On the recent models, the black coating seems to have been stripped off the spine of the blade and around the handle on the exposed tang between the canvas micarta. Is it in fact bare unprotected metal or is it some type of silver coating? I can't tell, and was wondering if I should keep a close eye on it. Thanks, Jeff

guinness, my INFI Steel Heart appears to be just plain steel around the grip. This appears to be from the blades being coated, and then the handle scales being installed, and ground/sanded for final finish and fit. I've used mine on several camping outings quite a bit and haven't had any sort of rust or other corrosion rear its ugly head. I tend to wipe down the knife pretty well after use, though, but haven't used any sort of specific protective coatings or Tufcloth on it and it still looks good so far. I have been thinking about using a bit of paint or bluing to cover the bare steel, but simply haven't gotten around to thinking about it seriously yet.

The pen is mightier than the sword...outside of arm's reach. Modify radius accordingly for rifle.

I had a collector's grade BM. It didn't have any coating whatsoever. I didn't get any rust on the handle section even with sweaty palms during use. Just a bit of rust on the blade itself when I didn't clean some tree sap and left it there overnight.

I have a Mean Street without the black coating. This weekend about I spoke with Dave Roberson at a show about this very subject. He said, although there should not be any issues with rust spots, it's not a bad idea to use a Tuiff Cloth on it just to be safe. I don't always clean my knives in a timely manner, especially when I'm in the field, so I think an ounce of prevention.....

Anyway, I apply Tuff Cloth to every knife I own, at least 10 or 20 times when there new and I'm playing with them. Don't we all obsess over each and every new knife?

My BM is not coated. You might want to drop Busse an email : busse@bright.net .

It seems to be fairly rust resistant though. I have left it dirty for a few days and it wouldn't rust so I poured water on it and put it back in the sheath and went to sleep. I checked it 12 hours later and there was rust (surprise), but it came off with about 6 rubs with a abrasive pad.

Update....I emailed Busse about it and they said they DO remove the coating from the spine, etc to facilitate spine whacking,, hammering, whatever may come up. Makes sense to me I suppose. Anyway, I've heard good reports of the rust resistance, so I feel better. They too recommended a scouring pad to gently remove any discoloration that may come up....jeff
