I've used PVC pipe, leather strops, 2000 grit sandpaper, mousepad, glass, etc. I've gotten creative with trying to find efficient ways to sharpen recurves, serrations, and other blade styles. I sharpen serrations with the sharpmaker rods, using the corner. A few swipes is enough to repair and correct the edge. If I get a burr, I use a strop with red compound and it comes off clean. You can also use a leather shoelace with a tiny amount of compound in the serrations. It works great and shines up the edge really nice.Interesting. I have read before about the sandpaper thing. I'm a stropping fool no doubt and I own a Sharpmaker.
I know this isn't the sharpening forum but I'd rather ask here with you guys. Is it easier to do a home made setup for sharpening like that or use some sandpaper wrapped around a sharpmaker rod?
Is the type Rev mentioned cool to use all the time when an edge actually needs to be sharpened not stropped. And one last question - I've never sharpened the Emerson serrations before. When it's time would it be easier to use the Sharpmaker or the sandpaper technique. Thanks fellas.
I have an Edge Pro with all kinds of stones and I even used a blank from a wasted stone to create a strop for the EP.
