When I was throwing my Ruck, it was handle hold, and edge forward. Yet every time I would pull it out of the board, the edge was oriented up. The blade must have twisted in flight, might have been an artifact of my release?
no, that is how all knives rotate when you throw them. They spin on axis, in addition to end over end. The only way to stop that is to throw no spin, which basically turns it into a quarter spin.
Here is that vid of a close, bit facing rear throw. Probably the most useful throw from a standpoint of an actual combat throw.
For throwing the hawk (goes for any ax) there are distances where you throw it forward facing, and back facing. You get more sticks from more distances if you go back and forth like that. For example at close range (6' feet or so, back facing gets a stick every time). Move back to about 12 feet or so and front facing sticks, move back to 25' back facing, 30' front again, 41' back to rear facing throw. If you do a throw from a distance and it bounces off the back of the hawk (in my case the hammer poll) just throw with the edge facing the opposite way the next time, if you rotation is the same it will stick. (rotation varies according to head weight, handle length, and how you throw. If you know your normal rotation distances with a hawk you throw a lot. If you need to slow the rotation, you can also hold up higher on the handle, and let is slid out, and that little bit of slide will slow the rotation.
real close reverse (if you are in between throwing from front facing and rear facing you can hold higher up on the handle and let it slide out, which will slow the rotation)

E Ralf Thorn has a method for throwing almost anything pointy and sticking from crazy distances. No spin combat throwing. Anything pointy in his hand he could kill you from anywhere within 60 feet. There are some crazy vids on youtube showing his throwing. He has a book and a video series you can buy. I have not, but have use the no spin throw.
