Is ther a leather treatment that works well on knife sheaths that protects from the humidity in the jungle?Or,should I forget the leather and get Kydex or some other synthetic material? Most of the knives in my collection come with leather sheaths only and I noticed that custom synthetics are kind of pricey.

If you're interested in a kydex or concealex sheath, you should try Eric of On Scene Tactical (Normark here on the forums). I've found his prices reasonable and his service excellent. www.mnsi.net/~nbtnoel/

I'm not Jeff, but I'll give you my answer. The only really good way to waterproof a leather sheath is to melt some parafin and dip the whole sheath in it. Pour out and wipe off the excess as fast as you can before you end up with a wax filled sheath. If you are talking about real jungle weather (110% humidity, hot, and rain just about everyday) then I don't think this treatment will last all that long. Kydex certainly has some advantages in that case.

I'm sure Jeff will have a more complete answer based on his extensive experience.

The best leather protectant on the market is Sno Seal, available at Wal-Mart. It will protect, but is not permanent. I've tried it all and your best bet is to buy nylon or a kydex/concealex product. Blackhawk makes a great nylon sheath with accessory pouch, and the best concealex sheaths on the market are made by Eric Noeldechen, aka Normark at On/Scene Tactical.

I've used this method for leather washer knife handles ... not sheaths.

Soak the leather in PEANUT OIL (not another type) ... the time depends upon the leather ... you want it totally saturated with the oil. Then take it out, and let it dry on some warm towels until it stops leaking.
I know that a leather washer handle will last almost forever after treatment ... sheath should also (?).

But, my first choice would be one of Eric's great Kydex sheaths.
