Question for Kevin Cashen re. Goddard goop

Knifemakers as a group are individualistic by nature and stubborn as well, It seems that only among such a group can such an idea even be challenged. I also cannot see how using this tool properly is blindly following the crowd, as I have seen reponses to this topic before.

Speaking of which, Del, are you sure that STEEL is the best stuff for a knife? Because I know a whole bunch of Greek and Persian soldiers killed each other with bronze swords, knives, spears, and armor, and Homer didn't just say that the bronze was good enough, he said it was BADASS.

Check this out: "He was coming down his pasture in the forest to drink of the river, for the heat of the sun drove him, and as he passed I struck him in the middle of the back; the bronze point of the spear went clean through him, and he lay groaning in the dust until the life went out of him."

CLEAN THROUGH HIM. If that ain't good enough, I don't know what is.
I think ALL you guys using steel without ever trying anything else are just blindly following, that's what I think.

Mike,
I know we have met and talked a few times, but you don't know me well enough to know that I am a big fan of bronze as a blade material. I think it is underrated by many and indeed it does make fine tools and weapons. I have made several bronze pieces including a gladius. Empires have been founded using using bronze weapons and tools, the significant advantage most steels have over bronze is in the durability if the edge. It is certianly possible to get a shaving-sharp edge using bronze, I know I have done it.
Go beat up on someone else for not using bronze, you picked the wrong target this time. :D
Del

P.S. I agree with Homer Bronze is badass.

Too funny! :D
I knew I was taking a risk cracking that joke, both because there are some makers out there working in bronze AND because I've been meaning for a while to give it a shot myself (and so somebody down the road might say "Hey, weren't you just picking on bronze in July?").
But I went with it anyway because I knew I couldn't find a quote from a famous authority about how awesome stone weapons were.

And it came back to bite me before the day was through! :foot: :)

I'd like to pick your brain about it... you coming to Cashen's event in August?

Mike, I am planning to if the sky doesn't fall first.

Bronze is totally badass! but obsidian makes for a sharper edge (its got no ductility at less than geological temperatures and it is a pain in the nuggets to resharpen though)

I use steel because it's easy :D
