Question for LEO's- guns for Busse trades?

Handguns must be sent via Next Day Air... UPS is the best route
The Next Day Air thing is UPS policy, not a Federal requirement. Use "Next Day Air Saver" for a cheaper option with the same level of control.

It is against the law to send any firearm via the USPS

Not entirely true.

Here is exactly what the ATF 'Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide' (ATF P 5300.4) says:

B8) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U. S. Postal Service?
A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. A nonlicensee may not transfer any firearm to a nonlicensed resident of another state. The Postal Service recommends that longguns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms.

You must only ship to a FFL dealer and they must send you a copy of their FFL signed in red ink... I think fax's are ok now

BLUE ink is also acceptable. Some dealers are unwilling to accept faxes. Others will even take a scanned image sent via e-mail.

OK but what about black powder pistols. As in cap n ball? Can a non licensee ship to a non licensee in another state (local laws not withstanding) and can they do it thought the mail. They are classified as an antique - so?

What do you think - anyone know?

i traded a gun to jerry for a shop credit. i am in california.

it must be shipped overnight to an ffl. i shipped mine to jerry's ffl, from an ffl in ca, though on my end it was not necessary.

Dumb as it sounds, this is one of the few advantages we have in Canada. You can mail firearms back & forth to no end. Some rules apply depending on type of gun, (ie: restricted or prohibited class) but we can go person to person. It's the rest of our gun laws that suck. Go figure???
