Question for my fellow knife nuts...

for a while I was somewhat into the pretty spyderco sprint run thing. I sold all my sprints and now I use EVERY knife I own. some of them get a little bit more heavy use than others, but I can't justify spending hard earned money on something that gathers dust

For me it is yes and no.

I buy folding knives to use so at least my fairly recent purchases all get used. The ones in my EDC rotation get used regularly- I rotate through all of them and give them basically equal carry time.

I used to buy custom fixed blade hunting knives, and most of those I bought with no intention of ever using them because I rarely if ever hunt. I did pick one or two and say IF I ever did get a chance to go hunting I would take those with me. Hasn't happened though and isn't likely to happen anytime in the near future.

I have some other fixed blade knives, mostly inexpensive utility blades and outdoor blades, that I do use a little bit.

My knife collection is only a collection of users, mostly kabars, mostly fixed blades.

I do have several of my favorite brand and it's just that I'm always looking at what I think will better suite my needs next.

That's how I end up with more than one. Not collecting, just sampling the catalog one purchase at a time ;) lol.

My uncle on the other hand has literally hundreds of knives, some of them duplicate purchases that I don't I don't think have ever been handled.

Both completely legitimately ways to gain a collection in my opininon.

For me it's that I can't wait to go out and beat up some wood with it or take it on a fishing trip.

Others may be lying awake daydreaming of putting another one up on their display shelf and that's fine too.

To each his own :)

all current users (4 spydercos and 3 traditional slipjoints.) those i don't use i give away. i have two retired users that i still keep sharp: gerber bolt action and buck 112.

I try to use every knife that I buy. Let's see...I should be through them by around the year 2125. :)

I use all my knives ,like many, some more than other. One hand trekker as my ultimate EDC and the coldsteel leatherneck w/FFG on my hip every time I'm out hiking.

I use all of them EXCEPT the antique slip-joints and a 70s BUCK 110.
Plus, I LOVE the look of scratched, worn, "beat-up" knives.

I use most of my knives because I like using them. But I do have some I don't use, a couple are more like jewelry with a blade and those are safe queens that might get carried on a special occasion. A few knives have sentimental value (my Dad's Buck 701, my original Old Timer) or have been retired from use. I have a couple that I simply don't like very much.

Everything else gets used - at least occasionally, at least gently.

I used to use all my knives.
Someday the meaning of "use" expanded.
Today I use some to fondle and admire.

I use all my knives.

either for random boxes or my work knives.

I really dont buy knives unless I need it. I'm not a collector.

I have carried and used every knife I own but I tend to use some a lot more than others. I'm not babying the others, or worried about using them because they cost more. I just prefer certain knives to others, whether it's because they're more comfortable to carry, or the blade shape is better for the tasks I use them for, or what have you.

All my knives are users, but I don't have anything that's worth a good bit

I dont consider all knives artwork haha.

majority of high end knives, yes. Or japanese knives.

I use all of my knives. But, I dont really beat on my knives just general edc tasks nothing crazy. I have two dedicated beaters I use for stuff I dont want to subject my expensive knives to. But. for me to really enjoy my knives especially the higher end ones I have to use them. But, like you I do baby the expensive ones a little bit. This is all relating to folders which I collect the most. The few fixed blades I have dont get babied at all because thats what I have them for.

I usually don't baby any of my knives. I take a different fixed blade out every time I go on a hike, to set up deer stands, or anything else outdoors. Most of my knives are fixed blades so I don't have many folders to choose from for EDC but they all get carried.

Collecting a bevy of beautiful safe queens is certainly a valid and reasonable way to go - makes more sense to me (as a knife nut) than bottlecaps or stamps!
But, I've built up my collection for using. Obviously, some get used more than others and if I know I'm going to be doing more than slicing or light cutting I'm more likely to pull out a Becker than a custom. But even my customs and more expensive knives are the sort that encourage use, and I do not hesitate to take them out and give 'em a little workout. I will feel bad if I damage them, but light scratches are wear marks add to their character. And I don't ever plan to sell them, so putting them away is more of a waste, to me, than putting them to use.
