Question for Peanut aficionados

I am new to slip joint knives and really like the case Peanut pattern. Problem is I always end up with one that has a leaning blade (or scraping) loose blade (blade play) or gaps , weak spring ect.

I would like to get one that is perfect-without the wobbly ,crooked blade or gaps associated with a production knife. So my question for you all is there any semi-custom or higher end Peanut patterned after the Case Peanut design that exists? Maybe another manufacturer that has the same Case peanut Pattern design? Or possibly someone that takes them apart and revamps them?

Or do I have to buy a dozen Case Peanuts before I find that perfect one?:disturbed:

Mike Alsdorf makes a very fine Peanut pattern, it's a custom but quite reasonable for the high level of craftsmanship. Beats being dissatisfied with multiple production versions, IMO.

Your best bet is to go to a Case dealer & hand pick one from their stock. you pay a few dollars more than buying online but save a lot of headaches.

I like the Case selection of handle materials and variations. But I only buy them in person.

One peanut-like pattern is the Schrade Old Timer 12OT. If you find an original it'll have a "USA" tang stamp with 1095 carbon blades. The quality is much more consistent than Case, but lacking in handle choices. There was a Schrade Old Timer Classics Peanut with bone handles but stainless blades.
Here's an interesting example:

Here's the Old Timer Classics set with the peanut in the lower right:

I agree with the poster above. If you're ultra particular then go hand-pick one in person. My yellow peanut is perfectly centered, perfect walk/talk and great snap. $32 shipped to me.

That is the problem. I always order online.

There is no dealer near me or even within a reasonable distance. I live out in the boon docks.

I think you're unlucky. I ordered two case peanuts online and both are near enough perfect. They are not custom quality but they are exactly what I would expect for the price.
A.G.Russel makes a very good looking peanut with pinched bolsters that I expect is very high quality, pricey though.

I don't know, but maybe, just maybe you could find a smaller online dealer you could call and explain your predicament. I couldn't point you to one here, but there are certainly some reputable folks that stand by their product on the authorized vendors list.

On the other hand, there is AGRussell, and he has a 100% iron clad satisfaction guarantee. He has several CASE peanuts on his site if you are interested.

I've been lucky, my Chestnut which was a gift is perfect fit and finish both blades centered, same with my stag Damascus, I've bought a few to giveaway from the same place as the one I was gifted came and all have been the same very good quality, I've had good luck with Case, actually better luck with Case than GEC.

Go with a Case select line peanut. It will cost 2-3 times a regular peanut but has higher fit and finish.

I know how that goes! So I hold off buying Case knives until the opportunity comes around; I drive by the largest Case dealer at least annually. It's only 750 miles away. ;)

If you like the pattern of the Schrades posted above, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a USA Old Timer online because of their high and consistent quality. That bone peanut can be found at auction NIB for less than the price of a nice Case.

Also check out the For Sale forums here at Bladeforums. Not only can you easily ask the sellers specific questions, but most will have photos that are superior to online stores.

Another brand with consistently good quality are the carbon steel Boker knives that are made in Germany. About the same price as Case. Don't know if you'll find an actual peanut pattern from them, but they do produce some small-ish pen knives that would be similar.

I wonder if Canal Street Cutlery makes a peanut or similar? They cost more than Case, but my recent purchases from them have been of excellent quality.

I would drive to a Case Master Dealer and have a look! Looking at the Case dealer map, it appears there is one not far from you. ;)

Or shop for one on vacation. Have you tried the swayback jack?
I haven't carried a peanut since i got one of the swaybacks. Cv blade.

I don't really care for the main blade. Want something pointier. That is why the Peanut is so popular.

HA HA! Well as it may seem close to me I am actually 25 miles from the city of McDonough and then another 28 miles .

Add the fact the Master dealer price is about $8. more than online . Then add gas to travel back and forth at 14 mpg. Heck I would rather take my chances and buy 2 knives since that what it would cost me to travel and the retail price. Not to mention the time I could do something else.

Thanks I am a knife crazy guy but I am frugal with my life.

I will look at the Shrades next time I am in a store that has them. But it is the two blade Peanut I want and it seems to be discontinued from what I have researched.

I have bought about ten in last two years . Only one was a little rough , they were all CV just buy one and see

The Imperial-Schrade Corporation went out of business in 2004, so eBay is where you want to shop for those. Look for the "USA" tang stamps to be sure you're getting an original.
A NIB two-blade bone Old Timer peanut like the one shown above was offered for auction recently with bidding starting at $35 and Buy-It-Now at $50. There were no bids.

There is a website named after a river that will allow you to return an item as many times as you wish. They'll even pay postage both ways and cross ship.

Go to the dealer and pick one out...... or buy from someone online and have them inspect them for a little extra.

IMO, take a trip for fun and include a stop at the knife shop as part of the trip.
