Question for Peanut aficionados

kniveshipfree.com has some peanuts in their Northwoods line. Stag and D2 steel. Made by Queen, IIRC. Very nice looking peanuts.

I posted about a Master dealer in Tucker a few years ago in the 'Georgia Blade' group.

I know your looking at 100 +/- mile round trip (I do 84 miles 5 days a week from Newton county to Atlanta and back so maybe I think of it a little differently) but if you won't log 100 mile for this, you just can't be too serious about it ;)
This is only about 2/3 of their Case XX display

That's one thing that's different about the Southwest. A trip to the large multi-screen movie theater is 90 miles. Each way.
I'm taking the boss's car to town tomorrow for service, 250 miles. Yes, each way.

If there were a large knife dealer only 50 miles away... wheh, makes my palms sweaty and my wallet nervous just thinking about it. :D

Wow! That's an awesome dealership! Is there a list of of locations of such large dealers? I'd love to see one here in the So Cal or Arizona region - anybody know of a big one like shown above?

but if you won't log 100 mile for this, you just can't be too serious about it ;)

I am serious enough to ask an online dealer and get these replies :

Hello, We will be unable to open/inspect any item prior to shipping. Kind Regards, (removed non BF dealer reference)

I find them to be within acceptable tolerances.
Thanks- (removed non BF dealer reference)

sorry these are all new in box, we don't open these thanks- (removed non BF dealer reference)

Now why will a Master delaer allow one to open the box and these guys won't? hmmmm!

Not sure why some will and some won't, but I know that at least some do. I've been to two master dealers, one in Tennessee and one in Missouri, and both would patiently wait while I went through as many as 8-9 boxes of the same knife to pick the one I wanted.

Check out the dealers here on the forums, I have had great experience with KSF with my GEC. I got most of my case knives in person, but my peanut and soddie were bought online without problems. I would suggest checking out the smaller GEC patters like the 06 or 15, but if money is an issue, a peanut is very hard to beat. anyway, check out the dealers around here, I have found that getting someone on the phone and asking about checking the knife sometimes helps, but it comes down to the dealer if there is a problem, and knife people seem to understand these things.. good luck, anyway you go, enjoy the nut. may I suggest yellow and cv...

In the many moons that I have been buying Case knives, I've only had to return one to an on line dealer for too much side to side blade play. Over the decades they were bought from hardware stories, catalogs and on line dealers, and most were bought unseen from the last two sources. So it's either luck or living closer to Bradford has a benefit of buying fresh knives before the go stale in some warehouse somewhere. :D

IMHO and experience, Case knives are more of a hit than a miss.

rdrogers in post #21 mentioned KSF's Northwoods peanut.
Here's a pic...

It has sambar stag handles and is made by Queen for KSF. It'll cost you twice as much as a Case peanut but I believe it's worth it if you get what you're looking for.
Your best bet is to visit the KSF website where you can pick out a specific peanut. Each peanut is listed separately so you can choose which stag you like. You can then call KSF and have them check out that specific knife for the quality you're looking for.

IN ADDITION......
I know you only mentioned the peanut design but you should also take a look at the GEC #06 Pemberton. It's a small knife like the peanut but is available with one or two blades. Quality is exceptional on my example pictured below.

Sent a email your way colubrid. I've got one that's centered and tight.

Unless I am misreading they didn't say YOU couldn't inspect them in person, just that they aren't going to fish through them and try to guess if it is good enough for you. I don't blame them, I wouldn't either.
I also totally understand you wanting them to do it, but if they do much business at all there just aren't enough hours in the day to be doing that.
I do ask for pictures of both covers if I am buying stag and have passed when a dealer wouldn't oblige. Other than that if a manufacturer can't deliver consistent quality I don't blame the dealers, I just don't buy sight unseen.

Personally I have found the odds that the next Case knife out of the box will be acceptable TO ME to be in the neighborhood of 50/50.
Am I picky? I'd say so, especially considering I am almost assuredly talking about the same knives 555 is looking at when he says:

I demand that any knife I buy these days to be about like the Seiko watch I am wearing. It ain't a Rolex, but it's not a cheap Timex either. I value it's form just as much as it's function.
I consider Case at their price points to be reasonably comparable to the kind of watch I wear. Not expensive, but certainly not cheap.
For that money I expect:
the blades to be pretty well centered,
the action to be correct,
the grinds to be correct,
the covers (color, jigging, fit to bolsters, fit to the liners) to be correct,
the springs to be reasonably flush opened and closed (don't much care about where the springs sit at the half-stop if there is one),
the pins to be finished correctly, not too proud.
and any gaps present (any gaps between the covers and liners are totally unacceptable btw) be too small to get the corner of a crisp dollar bill into.

If you, like me, think that everything I listed above should be 'standard issue', it has been my experience that you will absolutely want to inspect any Case knife personally before you buy.
The tolerances Case allows for in fit and finish are way out of line in my opinion.

If a knife can't be admired for it's aesthetics as much as for it's usefulness, I don't want it.

colubrid - not exactly living in a big Ga. city myself. Picked up my Case yellow delrin peanut at an Eastman's gunshow up in Dalton. Check out the schedule for the Eastman's shows & go check out the nearest one to you. There are usually at least 2-3 dealers there with a lot of knives to pick over.

The GEC Pemberton is another excellent choice. I've also heard good things about the A.G. Russell peanut.

Fly,

I am exactly the same way., I also like to USE my knives and hate to constantly see these flaws. If I was a collector and the knives were shelve queens I would not mind as much.

Colubrid, the email that's attached to my profile is garbage.
If you don't mind try me at this one. The peanuts your's as a gift if you want it.
