Question for Sal - Can the Laminate CF from Taiwan be used on a Golden-made knife?

This is more a "Please consider this", but I'm honestly curious. With the success of the Gayle Bradley and Sage 1 (and their uber-grippy very cool basket-weave Carbon Fiber laminate-layer scales), is it possible to get this material onto a Golden-made knife (or is this material exclusive to Taiwan)?

The reason I ask is that it would be absolutely awesome to see these scales on a Para-2, or Millie, or Manix, etc...

I know this has been talked about before, but I don't think I've ever heard a definitive answer and I was just feeling curious right now. If it can't be answered, then no big deal but if it's possible, then that will at least keep my hopes up for a future PM-2 in Basket-weave CF.

I'd almost take out a loan to get some dealer-exclusive runs made in that and some cool steel if it were possible.

A lot of people called foul when they realized it was CF/G10 and not solid CF, but personally I would rather have that over the solid stuff just to get the texture that the Taiwan knives have. It's not like G10 is a bad thing.

I'd like it on several Golden models heck yeah. Some people would freak out Im sure, like having it as a laminate decreases handlescale performance lol. The laminate will be more openly disclosed in the future so it really is a non issue moving forward (was never meant to be a secret in the first place like the very few alluded to awhile back). And like what EvilD said, G10 isn't a bad thing at all. I mean, making it complete CF is an option too but it would make it that much more expensive. Im good either way, but gotta do an eyeroll  for those that are gonna say they wont buy it because its a laminate; they may be the reason why we'll never see it.

I like a smooth Carbon Fiber, but I'm not crazy about the look of the Taiwan stuff myself, but thats just me. I know many think it looks better.

I've seen pics of CF knives from Golden that were sanded down, and thought those looked great. I woud love to see that done, but think most would rather have the textured CF like they now use.

My favorite CF is smooth without a textured look/feel.

I would love to have the basket weave CF as an option on more knives. Regardless of what others may say, I consider it an upgrade over G10, and certainly an upgrade over FRN, no contest. Imagine a Delica FFG with the basket weave CF, that would be a huge winner in the lineup!

You know, I didn't used to like smooth CF, but I've become very appreciative of it as of late. That being said, I don't know how I would like a Para-2 in smooth-CF (I'm actually sort of curious as to if I'll like the upcoming Ti version that's being talked about).

The Gayle Bradley is my go-to knife and it's in my pocket about 95% of the time, so I'd love to see the same carbon fiber texturing used on Golden models.

Would be cool to see these scales on a PM2, even a sprint, maybe with M4. Sure, send me 2 of them. ;)

I think this would be awesome as I just love the feel of those CF Laminate scales.

I'm also a sucker for the semi-textured Silver Twill Glass Fiber that's on the Spyderco Air and would own more with this material. I'd also go for it in different colors. =]

The silver twill glass fiber just kills the air for me, I like the knifes ergonomics but I can't get over that silver twill. Will probably pick one up sometime and replace the scales with G10 or carbon fiber. Same reason I didn't pick up the Nishjin R, just couldn't get over the handle scales.

Umm What? From a use perspective, its a gents folder, why on earth would it even matter if its real cf or glass fiber twill?

EXCELLENT suggestion/question!! I love the stuff and would really like to see it on a PM2.

I personally think it looks ugly. That is just my personal opinion and I would rather put a material on it that has more appeal to me. I don't like any of the glass fiber scale materials used on Spydercos, it just looks and feels cheap to me in hand. I could really care less what material is used if I like how it looks and it doesn't affect function. Which the glass fiber twill certainly does not affect function. All I am talking about is looks. Heck, when I get around to buying one and changing things out I might go upscale and use some burled ironwood.

I thought we were talkin about the laminate CF on the Sage and GB?

I never held an Air, looks ok to me though.

You are not alone. I think the "carbon fiber" from taiwan looks cheap and ugly. Maybe it's a nice looking scale material but it is nothing compared to the real deal. You just have to look at the picture Ken44 posted or cf other makers use. Then I look at my sage and think "What's this?"

I think the cf on the dodo is a step in the right direction.

I personally can't stand that peel-ply carbon fiber. I think it's hideous, and I love carbon fiber on knives. I was going to buy the Sage 1 and the Gayle Bradley, but I learned that they were both peel-ply. I love the designs, but I can't stand grippy carbon fiber. It feels so cheap.

He's talking about the glass fiber twill material, not the CF on that post.

It's not peel ply. The CF on the S90v sprints are examples of peel ply.

100% correct Neffarious and FCM415. My comments only pertain to the glass fiber twill. I love the carbon fiber laminate on the Gayle Bradley and Sage 1!
