I bought a billet of "San mai" with hatchi blue core and I'm not sure if it's okay to use.

First off there is a 50 thou difference from one side to the other. See pics below.

Second is the edge suppose to look like this ? And it also has a .025 crater in the towards the end of the billet ( on the skinnier side).

I have never worked with this stuff, so I'm not sure if what it suppose to look like. Just wanted to ask some of the pros. And why I ask is when I look at Rob Thomas San mai it looks completely different.

Thanks

Nick, I just purchased some HHH San Mai about a month ago and it came precision ground and you can see the darker 1084 core centered in between the stainless. Seems to be centered quite nicely in the stuff I got.

Did you buy it from a reputable dealer? You could always grind one of the edges and do a light etch to see how the core is oriented from one end to the other. That would at least give you some idea of what you can do to get it more consistent.
