I get along pretty good with the computer, but there are a lot of things I haven't figured out how to make happen. One is how to see a full size image of someones avatar ( or at least a larger one). It would appear that the size shown is all you can see. Any attempts to enlarge it just make it undecipherable. From that I would assume that the pixel count in the way an avatar is stored is just too small to enlarge. Obviously it isn't as simple as right clicking the photo. Any ideas?

Not being able to look at the knife in Bruce Evans avatar is really upsetting.:D

not all bulletin board software is structure the same way, and not all implementations of a given bb are configured the same.

in many, there are features such as user galleries, for organization of a user's pictures hosted by the website. in many of these cases, an avatar may be uploaded at any arbitrary size, and a thumbnail of that image created, so that it can be clicked, as a link to the full size image. on other bb sites, the image must either be uploaded already at the size to be displayed [e.g. 80x80px, or 100x100px], and therefore there is no larger size image available. in other cases, the image may be automatically resized by the site at the time of upload, so that there is still not copy of the original full-size image hosted by the site.

so; how this works on a particular site depends which bulletin board software they are using and how they have it set up.

unless i'm mistaken, it seems that as a non-paying member, i can not upload images, or have a gallery or avatar, so i can not tell you exactly how it is setup on this bb.

His website has closeup pics of the, um, knife. :)

The avatars are uploaded as small files (100x100 I believe or 120x120 for Platinum members) so there isn't a larger version to see.

The user can it appears upload different / larger versions for the profile page, so viewing that may be what you need to do.

There's a knife in that picture? :D

When I saw the pic I thought it was another thread about wood stiffener.

or is that supposed to be hardener.

The image enhancement that you see on 24, Alias, NCIS, etc. are bogus. There is only so much detail that you can bring out of an 80x80 image. The possibility of seeing the reflection of the photographer in the reflection of the blade is utter nonsense. The only way to get a noticeably better image would be to get him to send you a higher quality image.

Not only are they limited to a specific pixel size, but also a size in bytes. You can get a good quality picture as 100x100 pixels, but if it can only be a few KB in size then your limited on its quality. That picture is also a .jpeg image, so it has been compressed. The amount of compression plays a big role in quality.

Stacy,

Im not to sure about how to run a computer. Maybe you could try one of these.

I am a computer geek... have been all my adult life.

What I can tell you about this is that when you want to have an avatar or thumbnail expand into a larger image, you basically start with two images.... one small the other large. You display the small image first and hyperlink it to the larger image. Anyone that clicks on the thumbnail is then taken to a page that has the larger image.

There are, of course, other ways to accomplish the same thing. There's a Java scriptlet which allows someone to see the larger image simply by "hovering" over the thumbnail. Likewise, some bulletin board software creates thumbnail images from the full size image "on the fly".

I used to manage a VBulleting board, but it's been a few years (and probably a few versions). I seem to recall VBulletin does the thumbail on the fly trick... but that might be a newer version.

As for expanding avatars into larger images without already having the larger image... just not gonna work.

All the answers seem to agree with my supposition that the image stored is not expandable.
Thanks
