Please help me with a couple questions.

I have two SH-E's, both supposedly new and never used (one from the factory, one from an independent seller).

On the factory knife, the black crinkle finish covers the entire metal portion, (except the sharpened edge), including the handle between the scales.

On the other knife, the black crinkle finish has been ground off of the spine of the blade and around the handle between the scales.

Could the second knife be new or has it been played with?

Next question: The factory knife has a small chip (3/16w x 1/8h x 1/16d) taken out of the metal edge adjacent to the lanyard hole. It is covered with the black finish. Would this be something you would send back to be corrected? It would have absolutely no effect on the knife's performance, but if I decided to sell it, would buyers be likely to object?

Thanks for your help.

Mike

Hello Mike,
I'd say that both of your SH-e's came that way from the factory. I've had several SH-e's and they've been made both ways. More likely they were just made at different times/batches or finished by different people.

I wouldn't send the knife back for such a small imperfection, but I consider my CG knives as workers. Something so small wouldn't influence me if I were interested in buying it either.

:D:D

Ditto.

I have had both the ground even and the not. While the even may look a bit better (IMHO), the raised spine actually gives better anti-twist and roll performance. (YMMV)

Aren't the ones that are ground flush newer? I thought that was an "improvement" that was now standard (thought-I do not KNOW).

Hard on the karate pinky, though:yawn:

I thought the full coat ones were newer. Thought I remember
Jerry saying his customers wanted the extra corrosion protection.
So they were leaving them fully coated?? I'm just guessing, but think
I remember something like that.

Does anybody know for sure about the preceeding items?

Another question: The brass (I think) rivets on the handle are growing some green stuff on them. These knives have been in the box in a safe with a Golden Rod.

Do any of you treat yours in some way to prevent this?

Thanks,

Mike

When I clean my Busses, I use a Q-tip with either flitz metal polish, or Metal-Glow on it. And run it through the rivots to remove the "green stuff":D growing on it. Then I run a clean Q-tip through it with tuff glide on it, to prevent it from comming back. It does a pretty good job, because I don't clean them that often.

IIRC, the coated vs. skinned edges was primarily due to how well the Micarta slabs fit to the tang. Some are better than others and some aren't, therefore they get evened up.

I prefer the feel of the un-skinned. As Mike pointed out, the slight tang exposure gives a better grip IMO:cool:
