Question for the hamon guys

When polishing a hamon do you ever go across the blade?

I have some lines I believe are from etching in Ferris too long and it seems like I need to go across the blade to smooth them out. I had it clean, and switched to vinegar and 1500 silica loose abrasive but they came back in the vinegar etch.

I will try to post a pic tomorrow or late tonight about to head out the door.

I go every which way when polishing sometimes even circular but I have a feeling the lines your talking about are either banding or scratches you just couldn't see before the etch.

I don't think it's banding but I could be wrong, I guess it could be scratches but they follow the hamon .

When I etched with ferric chloride they appeared, I know I left it etching too long. I thought I had all of it out but they came back with the vinegar.

I would go back to sandpaper but I already etched my mark and I don't know how to,Work around that without screwing it up.

Man photobucket has gotten hard to navigate. I hope you can,see what I'm talking about because I don't want to go through that again.

Didn't see it at first. It's working for me now. I gave a description of what to do.

Looks like banding striations to me but I would default to Warren's expertise.

Eta or is it the marks right at the edge?

I spent the last 10 minutes in some sort of Android, photobucket purgatory, might be that I've had too much to drink.

Salem it was finished to 1000 grit, butt to tip. The marks going across the blade are some sort of ghost, not really there. Could just be something in the oil.

You guys are up late!

What type of steel was it? I get those kinds of lines when I try for hamons with 1084 steel. I dont know what causes it.

Well I'll be damned, I assumed it was a flaw that I had caused somehow because it didn't turn up until etching but mine looks just like that, not as pretty maybe but the striations are the same.

I'm going to go ahead and finish polishing it out and put scales on it. I have some nice mahogany I'm going to make scales out of leftover from a guitar project.

I don't normally post pics but I am going to put up some pics of this one when I get done since this is the first halfway decent hamon I've produced.

Thanks so much for all the help everyone I appreciate it very much.

Edit to add I followed that thread about the w2 and it still never occurred to me that it could be alloy banding.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I'm just starting to get this stuff figured out. :o

I was pretty beat last night. Looking at the pics today, I think it does look like either alloy banding, or carbide segregation.

You can see the striations in many examples. Here's one from Nick Wheeler.
