question for those who carry and use an umnumzaan

Zero lock up issues, or any othere issues. Very solid knife, exactly what you should expect from a blade at this price point. I'm 99% confident that the knife will function perfect for you, but in the 1% chance it isn't, Chris Reeves will stand behind it and make it right.

I have used my umnumzaan for everything from food prep and cutting cardboard, to using it as a scraper plane and scoring shingles. It has not failed me. Get one and use it and enjoy it.

I have some VERY nice nice knives..there all in a nice box on my desk, The Umnum is my Favorite! Dave

It's a great knife, I edc most of the time, and Ive never even cleaned it or used the take down kit and I've had zero issues

I've only had my Zaan for about a month(?) now, and I don't see any way this knife will accidentally unlock. In fact, it has the most solid lockup of any folder that I own, and I own some other excellent ones, too. I really like the idea of the ceramic ball as the contact surface with the blade tang.

I also own a large reg. Seb, which I also love, but I like the Zaan more. And during use, it actually feels more ergonomic in the hand. On an aesthetic note, I think it's a beautiful knife. Oh yes, and it's an excellent cutting machine, as well. :)

I've had no issues like this out of about 9-10 months of frequent EDC. It's one of the most solidly locked open knives I have ever owned while being super smooooth at the same time ;) And I really think it's one of the best EDC knives available today regardless of price.

I have an Umnum in my EDC rotation and there's no way that lock's going to fail under any kind of abuse I heap on it. It's a really tough knife.

Been using mine at work lately and it's a cardboard eating SOB with that thin hollow grind and S30V at 59.5 HRC (Tested).

No issues in the 6 months I've had mine, other than the fact that I have more of an urge to carry it than some of my more expensive customs. I've also been curious as to whether or not a sudden shock to the spine would crack that ceramic detent ball, mostly because I don't consider ceramic to be a tough material, though I suppose it wouldn't be that big an issue given that it's likely to be replaceable anyways.

With the blade open I used the spine to hammer a nail in a wall to hang a picture for my Grandma. It put a tiny dent on the tang--I'd doubt you could crack the ceramic ball.

Well gentleman, I have some bad news and good news to report. The bad news first: I went to plaza cutlery to get my umnumzaan yesterday and while examining the knife I got around to checking the lock up. I opened the blade and checked for side to side play, there was none. I grabbed the tip and wiggled it up and down and was sad to discover a tiny amount of vertical movement. I believe it was due to the tang of the blade sliding around on the ceramic ball as I wiggled the blade up and down. They had another in stock that I checked and it did the same thing. Maybe they had two lemons or maybe its just a byproduct of the design, I can't say. But I knew it would bother me so I checked out a large sebenza. Rock solid, no play at all. I prefer the looks and ergos of the umnumzaan but a solid lock up is more important to me so the good news is I purchased a large sebenza 21 and I really like it. It really feels amazing. People seem to think sebenzas are not tough knives but it feels like a tank. Very impressed with it. If you own a zaan open it up, grab the tip and wiggle the blade up and down. If you cannot detect any movement those two must have been out of spec right?

Zero blade play in any direction johnny:thumbup:. Perhaps consider ordering one direct from CRK? I personally wouldn't want to wait a few months for that though;).

+1 for me as well...and I have the TNK Tanto version...absolutely ROCK solid. So much so its difficult to unlock at times.

Good to hear guys. I think blade play is the wrong term to describe what I felt on those knives. Hard to describe but there was movement either in the lock bar itself or the tang of the blade was sliding around on the ceramic ball interface. I dunno either way I'm happy with the sebenza and perhaps I will get an umnumzaan in the future.

Any movement is considered play...as for mine...there is ZERO movement/play. When it's open it feels like a fixed blade, regardless of what I try to do.
