Question for those who cut themselves

I've said it before, there's way too much silliness here. I applaud the people who have the honesty to say it right off without the circle j**king thingy so common in forums.

Nerve damage can be very slow to heal. I lost feeling in my pinkie, ring finger, and part of the top of my hand from a very serious and jagged wound I received in a car accident. It happened when I was in high school and they had to stitch the tendons back together and cast my arm so that I would be able to move my fingers. 39 stitches in the hand, not counting the tendons.

Point being that after more than 25 years, I would say that I have maybe 85% of the feeling back. Nerves heal slow!

:D Actually I was thinking this was going to be some kinda "emo" thing. I mean, I have gotten cut, but I don't cut myself.

Exactly what I was thinking by the title. I never cut myself either, but then again I've always been the learn the hard way kinda guy. Once I learned what it felt like to get cut, cutting myself again didn't do anything for me. I was/am the stupid idiot who does stupid things to see what they felt like. Like hmm, what would it feel like to blow up a pack of black cats in my hand. Still have the scars. The only thing I can never get enough of is fire. No matter how many times I've burned myself, I still enjoy it.

Medical student here, which means I don't real know anything, need to say that first off. Any who, thumb numbness in one hand can be sign of an impending stroke, or heart problems. Generally though when this is the case there's other symptoms that go along with this one such as weakness, or excessive tiredness. If you experience an increase in how long you sleep, or you find yourself getting tired quickly go to a doctor.

From your brief injury description it sounds like you didn't penetrate far enough to do actual nerve damage, feeling should return in a few days.

I personally would not haves asked a question like this on blade forums, the answers you got are literally the same answers you would of gotten had you asked people in the bar the same question.

Honestly, who doesn't know to call a doctor about this kind of thing? He's probably already got an appointment with his family physician scheduled.

Why does no one take him for face value? You really think someone would make a post on the internet about a problem like this seeking reassurance versus umm... Just actual curiosity and interest like he says?

This is in no way medical advice just my experience.

I cut my index finger to the bone in a slicing motion between the first and second knuckle. I lost all feeling in the tip of my index finger. I never wen't to the doctor. I literally kept my finger straight (to let the wound heal) and bandaged for over a month. Obviously I changed the bandages. I assume I severed the nerve from the loss of feeling in the tip of my finger. The wound eventually healed, but the loss of feeling was still there. In time the feeling came back almost completely, but I do notice a bit of a numb feeling sometimes. I also get pain in the first knuckle from time to time. I am also not able to crack my first knuckle anymore. All is basically well, but there are some ill effects.

It sounds like yours is not this bad, but who knows. All it takes is one puncture into the nerve to cause damage. If you decide to go to the doctor or not is your own decision. I just wanted to share my experience with my (expected) nerve damage going untreated.

Pal,
If you are after an E-Hug for your pain & numbness it's not going to happen!
From some carelessness I had a knife blade I was working on a drill press do the helicopter of death and open my left finger to the bone for over three inches.

Yes its still numb!
WE DON"T HAVE E_VIsion or the knowledge to asses the damage.

WE STILL LOVE YOU!! Now Go to a F^&**ING DOCTOR!

Here's what you do. Soak it in pickle juice for 15 minutes, then cover it in Vaseline and wrap it in wax paper for a couple days. Don't go to a doctor. Those guys are quacks. Nerve damage. Pfft. Those charalatans are just trying to soak you for money.

What other body parts can this method be used for?😂

I cut the hell outta my left thumb. 16 stitches. Ugly, long, deep cut. Ever since, the edge of that hand, my pinky and half of my ring finger went numb. Told the dr - he said "feeling may come back, may not".... So far, not. Oh well...

Bottom line is: get it looked at, but dude, the feeling may never come back. Good luck.

Holy crap dude from 25 year nerve damage to a stroke. You don't need a doctor you need an ambulance! 911 bro

2 years ago, I cut my thumb nearly off, ring to close a CS Pocket Bushman. Been in hand therapy three times a week since, and my left hand all isn't functioning right. Follow the instructions on that beast; don't get creative.

Twenty or so years ago I cut my fore finger almost off with a box cutter. I completely severed the artery and the nerve. The specialist reattached both and stitched it up. He told me the nerve was a crap shoot,, it might respond and the feeling MIGHT return. Twenty years later I have complete use of it, but I only have partial feeling in it. I had a complete law enforcement career with it just as it is now. I have integrated into my life, it's normal to me, but still partially numb.

Would you be okay if you don't go see a doctor? Oh, probably...

Should you go see a doctor? Absolutely.

Nerve damage? I put a nice clean slice up the side of my thumb about sixteen years ago (one moment's inattention playing with a new knife - haven't made that mistake again). Nerves took a long time to completely come back - there's still a slightly odd feeling if I run a fingertip over it. (BTW, the cut didn't really hurt, just looked at it and said, "damn, band-aids aren't gonna work this time"; the stitches coming out hurt more.)

Do not, under any circumstances, allow this thread to devolve into oneupmanship of injury stories involving *pictures* - no matter what you did, on BladeForums there's someone who has done worse - I still shudder at the memory of some of the pictures I saw here in the deep dark past - doesn't matter if you dropped a bayonet clean through your thigh, there'll be a guy who accidentally chopped off his head with a machete, and had to sew it back on himself, with paracord, and has the pictures to prove it. So don't go there.

I'm not sure why all these guys feel like they have the right to tell you how to live your life, but I'll share my experience. A few years ago, I was messing around in the yard, dropping a cheapo (but sharp) knife onto some scrap wood, just to enjoy the thunk of it sinking in to the wood. Anyways, a bad bounce later, and the knife cut me pretty deep at the front of my ankle, where my shin meets my foot. I didn't have insurance, so I sterilized it and bandaged the crap out of it. Long story short, it healed up fine, I just have a nice scar. But while it was healing and for more than 6 months afterwards, when I would stretch the scar tissue enough to cause a twinge of discomfort, my brain "felt" the twinge on a different part of my foot. I think I got some wire crossed while healing and it took my brain a while to reassign them.

Another numbing story, about five years ago, I went to my grandfather's funeral in Taiwan. Taiwanese funerals are a little different than western funerals. They are super long, and as part of the family there's a lot of ceremony (standing, walking, bowing, kowtowing, standing back up, etc.) and then there was a hike up a mountain side to the grave site for another ceremony. Anyways, the only dress shoes I had were brand new full leather rockports. In addition to the nasty heel blisters I got, the "pointer" toe of my left foot was totally numb for the next year or so, and even know can have bouts of numbness if I wear the wrong shoes and walk for too long.

I usually have a 2 week rule for (non-major) things tho heal up. This sounds like it might need attention a bit sooner. Though my advice to all of us knife users here - keep a bottle of Liquid BandAid around. That stuff has fixed me up nicely in the past.

Or you could use super glue. It works great

I've cut the tip of my right thumb about 4-5 times. Always when closing a modern folder. I have numbness there that will last a lifetime. My own fault. Carelessness. Live and learn.
