I'm looking for the clay or putty or wax compound (whichever it is) that is used to fixture pieces while working on them. I haven't had much luck searching the web, mostly because I don't know exactly what it is I am lookin for.

I need a non marking way to hold my mini knives while working, and also I hve some plans for wood turning as well. Use it to cover natural ends I want to keep and put my spur into it, just remove when done, mostly for mini metal work, though.

Brands, terminology, suppliers, anything to help me out?

Thanx!

Lapidary workers use dopping wax melts to apply freeze to remove stone. Jess

Found it! Thermo-Loc is what I am looking for. Rigid and non-tacky when dry, heat to mold. Reuseable and non toxic.

Thanx for the ideas guys, but this is the stuff I am after.

I am pretty sure USA knifemaker sells it. I have a source for Matsuyani also. It's Japanese pitch. It's what I use for carving Tsuba and sword fittings. it's a mixture of pine resin and powdered clay basically. It will last forever and smells piney/smokey not petroleum like red/German pitch.
