question for you experienced makers - do you EDC a production knife?

Well the title sums it up, do you experienced makers carry a production knife as part of your "every day carry" rotation, or do you carry something of your own creation? Mostly I'm interested in what most makers consider to be "good enough" for themselves. If anything like when I was working in the bicycle industry, it is more likely a perfectly functioning, immaculatly tuned, not-so-glamorous work horse that only other people in the know would really appreciate.

So I summon all you JS and MS and other experienced makers to show what you carry in your pocket, or on your belt everyday! Actually even if you are a new maker feel free to chime in as well.

I own a smattering of nice quality production knives, which I used to EDC and complain about to varying degrees, but I've carried and used my own knives daily and exclusively and happily for about the last year. To carry something I didn't make myself wouldn't say much about my confidence in my knives.

I don't make folders, that may be an issue for some. But I've never gotten a single dirty look for carrying my fixed blades. It's one of the best ways to test a knife in the "real world" and doesn't hurt any when people ask what you do for a living.

I can't afford my own knives :-) I carry a Warren Osborne Benchmade folder for my EDC, but do use four of my own kitchen knives every day (damascus and 52100.)

I carry a Benchmade Mini Grip or a Kulgera, but usually have one of my small fixed blades about my person somewhere also. The folder is mostly for when I need to use a knife in public, a fixed blade seems to draw attention where a folder can go unnoticed.

I EDC the knife in my sig. she is pretty beefy and i dont mind putting it through abuse on a daily basis. Also i can show people what a nice knife can do as opposed to a $13 wally world kso.

Disclaimer: Not even close to a JS or MS.

I carry a folder that I made. I can not imagine carrying a production folder after that.

I also am no where being a true maker, but I rotate between 3 knives, Benchmade 556 Minigrip, Benchmade 710, and this little one I made.

It is great for opening boxes and such, the thing I do most with my knives

I am not even in the same realm as a JS or MS, but for EDC I carry my own knives. Like previously said, its a great way to put your own work to the test and find its limits and capabilities.

I usually carry both. since I make fixed blades exclusivly, I find that I usually have a production folder, and one of mine

I carry a production folder most of the time, a neck knife I made some of the time, a custom Barlow style slip joint from Ralph D'Elia sometimes, and one or another of my fixed blades anytime I'm outdoors.

Nowhere near the same level as the other guys who have commented but (since you asked for the newbs to comment as well) I carry one I made, a little 7" fixed. I also still grab my ESEE Izula from time to time but enjoy carrying one that I've made, in either a leather or kydex pocket sheath.

I started collecting factory knives long before I started into making knives. I own a whole bunch of production folders, and I almost always carry a factory produced folder as an EDC. My career doesn't lend itself to carrying a fixed blade, and as I don't currently make folders, I don't have much choice. :D

I don't have a problem carrying a nice production knife, and I don't have a problem carrying one of my own. Well, there is a problem there, as I only own one of my own that is completed (and I do carry it on occasion...a small fixed blade).

I only make fixed blades but I don't usually carry fixed blades. When I carry a fixed blade it is one of my own (unless the task requires a knife that I didn't make). If I made folders I would carry my own (assuming I didn't totally suck at making folders).

Before I strted making blades I carried a MC-31D - Kasumi. I stopped carrying blades when I started traveling more... and never started carrying again after the travel subsided.

I typically carry three knives. One small friction folder I made, a kershaw shallot, and a small belt knife. I like this selection because in a place where wearing a belt knife won't be well looked upon, I can still carry a decent folder, one that I can't make. Then the small friction is just as a backup.

This is a good thread. I've made a few of these and had one lying around, so now it will be my EDC and the Benchmade is going back on the bench.

Cru-Forge V w/Ipe scales.

Thanks for the inspiration. It helped me to remember all the times at renfaires and gunshows that I used to sell at. Everyone wants to buy the knife you have on your belt. Never fails. Try it next time you go to a show and see what happens.

I carry the 2nd folder i made. The one on the right. One of my fixed lives in the truck.I also carry a variety of production knives.I wore out the blade on a Benchmade 530 and im just now finishing up a damascus blade replacement.I think it will make a good carry piece for both use and advertisment.

Wow, seems like there are more people who carry atleast one production knife in their edc kit than I thought. Haven't heard yet from the ones who make folders much, though. Myself (even though I don't consider myself a maker) I carry either a Kershaw Skyline or a M16-13, a Folts Minimalist, 7" First Strike fixed blade, and usually two of my classic slipjoints. Sometimes I carry a 6" utility fixed blade I made with Myrtle scales. Ill post a pic of my rotation when I get home.

Good stuff so far, keep 'em coming!

I carry a SOG Flash 1, and a little Queen pocket knife.
I do a pretty neat little automatic conversion on the SOGs.

If I don't carry my own knives, how could I expect someone else to?

I have 2 of my own that cycle through the pocket.
