question for you experienced makers - do you EDC a production knife?

I use my "rejects" around the home and shop. My EDC pocket knife is of these I reground to be good and properly thin:

I'm pretty hard on my working pocket knives. A year of use is pretty good. This one has held up well.

once you go the path of making you own folder its hard not to carry one that you put together
it also helps you get the feel for what a proper custom folder should be and how long a well built knife works even under hard use

i think im due for a new folder but its funny cause this latest one was the shortest run for in my pocket not a yeas ( i wanted a dress knife but i dont use a dress knife all the time )
so the dress knife is in M4 and i think the next will be back to my more hard use style and a carpenter steel that they sent me to try out (high alloy PM style Stainless steel)

oo and since im such a steel whore i love getting the chance tyo beat the hell out of a new steel

Since I haven't made any folders yet, my EDC blade choice is 50/50 a small fixed blade I made myself and a carbon steel Opinel folder. Depends on my mood which one ends up in my pocket that day.

I'm not real big on a bunch of knives in rotation (nothing against it) but I can't remember the last time I carried a production knife. Yes I have my share of them too. Current is one of mine thats been 4 years now and going strong every day.

Last time I carried a production knife was simply because I didn't have a folder ready to carry. It was a cheap Benchmade, and it worked very well. If at all possible I carry what I make, it's a great way to show off and learn any limits or mistakes you made and how to improve your design. Not to mention first time I went to work overseas I took a wallyworld special, a buck mayo, and within a week had destroyed it. You get used to a quality knife cheap ones just don't cut it any more.

I carry one of my own knives (small fixed blade) and an Endura.

I carry the Endura because I haven't figured out how to make folders yet. As soon as I do, the Endura will be gone.

Whenever I carry one if my large fixed blades, someone always ends up wanting to buy it.

I just added a new folder to my EDC, I have 5 that I rotate, One hard work, two day to day, and two sunday go to meeting. I need to get pics of these together, Maybe tonight and I will post the pic. I also have three fixed that I carry when called for, 8" scalper, 5" drop points and 4" lightweight for mountain bikeing.

I carry my first and only liner lock knife I made in Don Robinson's shop and a BenchMade Grip. My liner lock is small and the Grip is the fullsized beefy knife. I love them both.

Spyderco Endura 99% of the time. The 1% of the time when it's a fixed blade, it's one of my ugly early test pieces.

Great question! I certainly don't count as an "experienced maker", but I did start making knives specifically that would be carry-legal in my state.

I've continued to discretely carry my IWB Boker Hyper, but now when I'm not going to the office I've always got a homemade one on my belt, and that gets 90% of the use. I'm trying out the 3rd one so far.

Around town I carry a spyderco Goddard (the big one with zytel handle and reversible clip) that I reground to convex, and a victorinox. Around the yard and in the woods, I carry one of my fixed blades, usually a seax of modest size... the neighbors gave me weird looks when I tried carrying the langsax...

good thread..... If I made folders I'd be carrying one for sure, and as for the last 6 months I haven't carried a fixed... this phase of mine comes and goes.... :D

I've sold many of my folders, what you see below is what I've kept all are users and get carried regularly.. each one with their own purpose for whatever/wherever I intend to do/go..

1> Kershaw skyline: my complete construction phase abuser.. I have two and the original one is almost a toothpick now.. great value knife and light although high ride.

2> Buck Pro Vantage s30v: another construction, rough outdoor user, this knife carries great and love it, its a little heavy and I'm going to take the liners to the press very soon..

3> Spyderco Sage: more of preppy church type outing, no thrashing involved... nothing not to like, to me its perfect in everyway.. matter of fact when the Chapparel come out I'll be the first in line..

4> Spyderco Delica: gets used for lighter duty as the blade is super thin, I've polished out the grinds on this one.. spine and all... great knife but rides a little high for my liking..

5>1971 Puma Junior: a little sentimental value here.. gets carried in dress clothes or where people may fear for their life if they see a clip on my pants :D never used for anything heavy and is pretty much pampered..

I don't have a production folder, but if I did I'd want a Ripple.

I carry a couple of my fixed blades fairly often. Soon I'll make myself a folder. I hate being the "knifemaker who doesn't have a knife." Ha ha ha, like I haven't heard that one before.

I just got my BM 530 back into service with a new blade i ground myself. So its kind of a custom now i guess.I love this pattern although i admit i have gotten it turned around and tried to cut with the spine a time or two.:oThat side doesnt cut very well.

Working on a hunting ranch I find it hard not to carry a knife I made. I carry an early fixed blade I made on my belt. In the past four to 5 years the only days I haven't carried it were days I spent on a commercial plane. Church, business, doctor, it doesn't matter it's on my belt.
I also carry my first liner lock with ruby bearings that I made in Jerry McClure shop with his Cracked Ice damascus.
