Question for you multi-tool folks

I also will go with a Leatherman Multitool as my first choice, I went out in the woods yesterday with my Leatherman Blast and my Vic Rucksack, did some some sawing and guess what, the Leatherman saw worked better than the Rucksack's.

I do at times carry both a Leatherman tool and a Vic Sac usually either the Rucksack or Outrider model.

For me, I have a Leatherman PST and a SAK Traveller with me pretty well all the time (I also carry several folders). I probably use the pliers the most, and then either the philips screwdriver or straight bladed screwdrivers the next. I hardly ever use the blade to cut anything. On my SAK I've used just about everything on it at some point. Use my SAK on the smaller cutting jobs and my other folders for larger cutting jobs. I work in a software research lab testing software, and constantly working on PC's swapping out hardware, etc. - PST is handier than running back for tools when you have a deadline to meet.

For me the best combo would be a Wave/Charge in a belt sheath with the Wenger Std Issue/Case/OT stockman in my watch pocket.........this combo allows me to handle almost any chore along with my keychain which has a Wenger Esquire and a Photon 11.........I like to be prepared.....and recently I have also taken to clipping a CRKT Contrail in my right jeans pocket.

For me, I guess a multi-tool is more useful, but still SAKs are like classic sports cars, I usually alternate between the two - some days I feel like driving the classic sports car, some days the SUV.

After decades of relying on SAKs for EDC, I came across multitools and decided to test drive the concept. My first was a Leatherman PST. It was okay, pliers a plus, but the overall package was not as useful as my Swisschamp, so I wound up reverting to the tried and true.

Then, in 1997, I got hold of a Supertool. The loocking blades made all the difference, and the tools were much closer to the real article than those on SAK and PST. It was 95% perfect for my needs, and when Leatherman came out with the Micra as a companion piece, my joy was complete.

That doesn't mean I have given up on the Swisschamp. It has a pen. It has a toothpick. It has a magnifying glass. So I go on and about with one, the other, or both, depending on what might be anticipated or mood.

Good stuff, both.

If you want pliers that can be used as pliers, rather than as tongs or as wire-cutters, then the tool has to be built around them. Where-as you can put a good blade on a multi-tool as easily as you can on a swiss army knife.

That said, a lot depends on the product. I have a Vic Swiss Tool, a Leatherman Juice and a Serbertool M4, and only the Swiss Tool really has decent pliers. The pliers on the M4 are hardly better than those on a SAK would be. Still, tongs and wire-cutters are nice to have. I think my ideal tool would be based around pliers.

I think the standard answer to this question got tossed on its head when Leatherman started using high quality steel (154CM) for the Charge TI line. I think it's fair to say that the main blade on the Charge is the best knife currently available on any multitool, period. (I can't think of anything else that comes close.)

So, while I always carry another folder with me, I'm pretty happy using my Charge as a knife and not just as a pocket toolkit... ;)

I prefer the plier multi-tools and find them more useful.

I like SAKs because there is something traditional about them, and they have a good feel of quality that many other toold lack.

I edc an origional Wave. The one handed locking blade really made the big difference.

I never used to miss the pliers until I started carying them. They are heavier though, and not to comfortable in the pocket. I am not crazy about always wearing a belt sheath and plan to upgrade to eh Charge with a pocket clip.

I wish Vic made more SAKs with the combo tool. I find having both the bottle and can opener a bit of a waste.

OK, i started being a knife guy needing something to screw with and some more.

So carrying a knife every day the plier based was my choice.

A SAK, i think is a knife with options but the plier folding tool has more options. If the more weight compared to a SAK is no question, tools like the Wave or Swiss Tool Spirit are the general use way to go.

I found the plier tool to be the right addition.

Once i unlocked the toilet door in a restaurant with the plier, where my three year old son had himself locked in without knowing how to come out, and all this in a second so my son didn´t had the time to panic, i would always opt for the plier tool and since then i never regret buying the Wave.

I've had countless SAK's before, but nothing yet has beaten my daily carry Leatherman Wave. I'm an engineer by trade so the "proper" pliers and locking blades are very welcome additions to my pocket.

Mr. Valdes,

What is that Flashlight and Wave carrier that looks like a double magazine pouch?

I'd like to find one like that!

Thanks,

Dave/S.K.

In my truck I have a Leatherman Juice, Spyderco Native, CRKT F4, CRKT Crawford Kasper companion, Kabar shorty tanto, CRKT Crawford Falcon fixed, an el cheapo Tomahawk machete, and some POS "survival" knife, that I mainly keep for the matches in the hollow handle. I EDC a Spyderco Delica and SOG Twitch I, have a Gerber shortcut and Spyderco Ladybug on my big keychain, and have my Leatherman Squirt on my small carkeys only keychain. I also have a SOG Blink in my BOB.

Guess which I use the most?

If you guessed my Juice, you'd be right. It's not as bulky as my Old Wave or Powerlock, and it's a lot better IMHO than my SAK, a Vic Swiss Champ, all around, mainly for comfort carry though.

Hi my point of view.

Everywhere always on like a backup blade and as tool:(urban and outdoors)
I prefer to carry my Vic Spirit slim, ligth and a lot of tools

Outdoors:
I ad a real blade=fixblade.

I love my Farmer SAK is so ligth and the best awl ever.
