Question for you Sheathmakers

The first stitch needs none, if you are using the standard figure 8 saddle stitch. When you do the last stitch, back stitch 3 times, cut off the excess.

I start three holes form the end, stich to the end, and then back over those stiches and keep going to the other end. Then stich back three holes again. This doubles the stiches on both ends. Now push the back thread back through to the front. Tie the front thread to it close to the hole that the back thread came through, and clip off the front thread, now push back through the same hole, and clip the thread off as close as you can. This hides the knot inside the hole.
Hope this makes sense.

The first stitch is secure because I use a saddle stitch with two needles, and I start in the middle of the thread. The last stitch, I backstitch 4 stitches, wrapping the thread around the needle each time to twist it inside the hole. I normally have to pull the last ones through with pliers, then I snip them off with fingernail clippers. I have had to take a sheath apart, and it is not easy. you literally have to cut each stitch.
