Question how to use belt sander for sharpening.

I experimented quite a bit, still the manual sharpening is more precise using the Lansky diamond sharpening kit. Just have to be patient.

I keep getting round out edges using the belt sander. I can get it very sharp, but the edge part is more round. It is hard to put the knife totally horizontal and push the blade edge towards the sanding belt to grind. The moment the edge touch the belt, it pull my knife towards the direction of the belt travel, just make the blade rounding up.

I can make the knife sharp, slicing thin note book paper easily, just the edge looks bad. I am sticking with the Lansky for the moment.

Thanks

I don't often sharpen on my 1x30, but when I do I use the method suggested by pro sharpener Cliff Curry, which is to use an angle guide and sharpen edge leading.

I have the angle grind also, I just not good at it. I try to slide the blade forward towards the belt gently, somehow it pull the blade to the direction of the belt rotation and result in a rounded grind.

Problem is it might need to sacrifice a few knives to get the hand of it. After I screw up on one, I don't want to screw up another one. The knife is sharp, just it doesn't look good like professional grind. It looks round.

That's ok, I got it nice with the Lansky, the grinder is cheap, about $50, I still can use the grinding wheel, and if I need to sharpen a knife really quick, it will work, just don't look at the edge and is all good.

thanks

Is the belt moving into the edge or away? If it's moving toward the edge it shouldn't be pulling the blade forward.

Moving away from the edge, that's the reason it pull the blade forward. This is the blade I am sharpening, as seen in the picture.

I have to rest the part circle in RED on the angle bracket to push forward instead the bigger flat surface circled in BLUE. The angle bracket is fixed 15deg, It would be too big an angle if I rest the surface in BLUE and push the blade forward. That would be 15deg + whatever the angle of the blade. So I have to rest on the surface in RED. It's not very stable, that's the reason it pulled out of my hand and wiggle to round the edge.

I tried to just holding the knife free hand without using the angle bracket, result not any better, still round.
