I just recently joined the forums and have found several very knowledgeable people so I'm hoping someone can help me with a dilemma I'm having. I currently own a Chris Reeves Green Beret and a Tops Steel Eagle 107D. Both are gifts that i have recently acquired. They are both very nice knives, but after reading up on Swamp Rats, Busse's and the cheaper Scrap Yard Knives I really want one. Are the knives I own comparable to these as survival knives or should i look into trying to sell them for one of the others above.

Thanks for any input.

I feel your pain my brother. I am looking at which knives are going and which ones are staying as I sit here and type. Those Scrap Yards are SWEET!

As was mentioned on some other threads, if you don't hammer on it or pry with it, the Green Beret should be fine. Though it would probably also have the highest re-sale value (if in good condition).

The Tops knife should be pretty tough, and more along the lines of Busse and Scrap Yard (though not quite in the same league).

Chris Reeves Green Beret is many peoples holy grail knife. Keep in mind I mainly buy Busse..... Knives are a matter of opinion and I do highly recommend any Busse family knife. That does not mean you will like them more then what you already have. If they appeal to you then buy one, but if your are buying one because they appeal to one or many of us, you are buying it for the wrong reason.

I am looking at the busse family of knives b/c from everything i have researched they fit the description of a proper survival knife. I also love the way their knives look. The Busse's INFI steel is what i like most about those and i really wanna give it a test to see if its as tough as it says. I think that i may keep both of my knives and buy one of the Scrap yard ones since i found them for a reasonable price.

I am going to take a wild guess and say you have been watching knifetests.com?.....

Are Busses one of the toughest knives made... Yes

but as for a survival knife that is normally going to be your EDC. Because I don't know many people that know they are going to end up in a survival situation. So if its to big to EDC it probably wont be your survival knife. Sounds to me you want a knife that is known to be the toughest and I would agree that is Busse, but others might think other wise.

Since "survival" is a term with many meanings could you tell me more about what you want to use the knife for (camping, heavy chopping, safe queen, mainly cutting, etc). I can recommend you what Busse fits your needs along with a few from other brands to compare to

Im wanting one of the busse family line of knives for camping, chopping, cutting etc. I have pretty much decided on a scrap yard knife b/c my Chris reeves knife is pretty much a safe queen.

Aside from the merits of the individual knives, remember that you can always find the money to buy just one more knife, but you may eventually regret parting with a knife you really liked enough to buy once. :)

Accumulate! You can always sell one later if you end up with so many it never gets used anymore.

the Scrap yard Scrapper 6 is a good chopper/camp knife (keep in mind knives for chopping and those for cutting are very different in design)

Ranger RD6 is another good one to compare to in the same price range

Another would be RAT RC-6 (not out just yet but soon).

Keep in mind I think this is the style of knives you are interested in, there are many great makers and I have only listed a few.

I have been looking at the at the yard guard and the scrapper 6. Is there any chance you might know where i could acquire one? I have been on there site and im guessing they are either out of stock or not selling them at moment.

LOL that is a great question and one that gets asked a lot. :D Busse knives are only produced in small batches through out the year. Hence you can only buy them directly if they happen to be making the exact model of knife you are after. Normally you will not be that lucky and have to buy them on the secondary market. The price will be higher (sometimes much higher). Here is the link for where they are sold on the secondary market....

This is some of the best advice you can get. Like I said the GB is one hell of a knife and many people will never have the pleasure of owning one. Its also a keeper IMO

You have fine knives, but personally, I'd sell them to get a Busse.

This is also sound advice but then again I have a INFI sickness

I agree, ill keep it as long as i can just b/c it was a gift and i like it. Im going to try my best to get a scrap yard as soon as possible so i have a go to knife, then soon as i can get the money saved get me a Busse so i can experience the infi blade. If anyone comes across a scrap yard scrapper 6 or yard guard pls. let me know and i appreciate everything so far greatly.

Check out the Exchange forums for the Busses for aale and post in Knives, wanted to buy also.

The only reason I suggested selling the knives you have is because it seemed like you weren't concerned with parting with gifts. If they hold sentimental value or you don't like trading away gifts, definitely just save up for a Scrap Yard, Swmp Rat or Busse.

And in all honesty, even though Busse's pretty much as bad ass as they get, most people probably won't abuse their knives enough to phase a Scrap Yard.
