Question: Knife laws & MT UDT models

For years I've heard everyone rave about microtech's UDT models. I like the design and most definitely would have purchased one by now. The problem is it is an automatic.
I guess my question is what exactly are the laws governing the purchase & shipping of an automatic knife primarily from any one of the internet knife stores.
What really confuses me about this is that the shear number of people I see talking about auto knives on the forums can't all be LEOs or military. I have also noticed that auto knives are now being seen on ebay. The auctions I have read make no mention of shipping only to LEOs or military, but do mention the carry or use laws in your area.

My understanding is that auto's shouldn't be shipped across state lines unless you are military or law enforcement. Does it happen? Every day. I suppose that some internet stores are strict about this and some are not.
