Question: Old 110 That Seems Stuck Open

Picked up two 110s that had been displayed in a collection with blades open for many years.

They're in nice shape and the two dot is new with box but they're both so tight that I can't get them to close.

The latch on the butt is so tight that I can hardly press it down at all.

Is this because they were left open for so many years?

I haven't run into this before. Any suggestions?

Nice score. Try lubing them. BreakFree CLP works for me, and there are dozens of oils and lubes recommended by fellow knife nerds here.

Thanks for the ideas.......I'll have to do some blasting with Rem oil.

Here's the old one......I think it's a late '67 or '68.

I recall, years ago, I had a similar problem with one of my lock-back knives (not a Buck). I couldn't squeeze it sufficiently to budge it. At the time, I think I used a vise with non-marring jaws and something like a wooden dowel positioned across the end of the lock bar to squeeze it sufficiently to unlock it. Once that was freed up, I then spent a lot of time cleaning it up and lubricating everything while exercising the lock repeatedly. If nothing else you attempt frees it up, that might be worth a try.

If the previous owner used a synthetic oil it can in time turn into a gummy sticky goo. Some penetrating oil soak should dissolve the gummy goo and free it up. Then use some warm soapy water to dunk it in and open and close it several times then rinse and dry. Apply some mineral oil, it won’t dry to a sticky goo and wipe off excess.

They're both working now, but not without argument.

After a couple of days the newer one locked up again.

I blasted it hard with WD-40 and then a LOT of Rem-Oil.

That got it moving again.

I'm going to go with the soap and water suggestion and then re-oil.

Thanks again to all.
