Question on 154CM talon....

First off let me say that the Talon in 154CM is one darn fine knife (even whether or not you take into account the great bargain price)! The blade and handle shapes make this one of the best general utility knives (both production and custom) I have had the pleasure of owning.

However, I have one small issue regarding the knife I have yet to fix. The knife (specifically the area between the scales and the tang) has a habit of leaving oil/grease stains on anything it touches. My hand starts to get quite greasy and slick after a bit of usage, and though I cleaned off the knife several times and wiped up the offending area, the oil keeps seeping out. I also removed the scales and tried washing the tang and the scales and replacing the default oil with something a little more viscous and in less quantity, and though it helped a little, my hands still get a bit more greasy than I would like (no it's not my hand that is causing the problem, I checked on other knives already

.

Maybe the area I live in has had a lower atmospheric pressure allowing the oil to more likely seep through. Maybe I tightened the screws too much when re-attaching the scales. Maybe I need to just remove all the oil in betwteen the scales all-together (would rust between the tang/scales be an issue?).

Can anyone make some recommendations on how I can alleviate this issue?
Thanks in advance.

Felix

Just remove the oil...it would take quite a bit of neglect to rust a polished 154-cm blade.....

I recommend tuf-glide or tuf-cloth by sentry to remove the oil and to use as a light rust prev.

works great.

Felix,
You've got me stumped! I've checked a few 154CM TALON's and regular TALONITE TALON's since first reading your post, and I don't find any noticeable amount of oil around or under the scales. If you are already up to taking the scales off, please just wipe off the offending oil. If you are working in a corrosive environment, you might want to wipe the inside with Tuf Cloth if you have one, but I wouldn't worry to much about it. If it still keeps coming out of the G10[!], please let me know, as this would be a first for us! Of course we will do whatever it takes to make you satified with the knife. This is not normal!

If for whatever reason you don't want to take care of this yourself, or if you are not comfortable removing the scales, please email me, and we will make arrangments for you to send it in, and we will take care of it.

Will--

I guess I didn't make it clear originally in my first post, but the oil appeared to be coming from the area btw the tang and scales and I did remove the scales and removed the oil.

Before I cleaned up the oil, I would get quite a bit of oil release while in use (I guess from the squeezing of the handle. After about 24-hrs of just lying around, a significant amount of oil would percolate out btw the tang/scale (enough to actually produce some stain dots on the paper I had put it on). Most of this occurred before I opened the scales, removed the default oil and replaced it with mineral oil.

The problem isn't as bad any more. A little bit of the mineral oil always comes out when I use the knife, but now it's still a minor annoyance.

Do you feel that if I removed all the oil there would be a problem with water possibly getting in btw the scales and tang and causing corrosion? I don't live in a humid environment or near the ocean, so the only water the knife would encounter would be from washing and say river or lake water.

Thanks again Will and everybody.

Felix

Felix,
I think you will be fine wiping all the oil from between the scales and the tang. I still don't understand where all this oil is coming from? If you are uncomfortable with the scales/knife in any way, pleae understand that we will replace the sclaes for you if you want to send the knife in. But, if you think that wiping the oil off the tang and the scales will aliviate the problem, by all means, get it out!

I don't think you will have any corrosion problems due to the tight fit of the scles and the polished 154cm.

Will--

Thanks again for the quick reply and the great service offer. As far as I can tell there is absolutely nothing wrong with the knife itself or any of its parts. When I first detected the oil seepage and removed the scales, I discovered a copious amount of what I can best describe as a semi-translucent dirty oil/liquid? on the tang and scale underside. I'm assuming that the oil was purposely put there to prevent corrosion.
It's possible that for some reason my knife accidently got an extra large dose of oil before assembly. It's not a big deal, I just thought it strange that my knife acutally leaked.

I will remove all the oil from the tang and the underside of the scales and this hopefully should solve the problem. I'll use tuf-cloth on the tang in I plan on using it near saltwater.

Thanks again Will for the response and for helping to produce such a great knife.

Will:

(Nothing really to contribute to Felix's original post, as I'm not having that problem.) I just wanted to let you know that your presence here, and positive, speedy replies were in large part what tipped me over the edge in recently buying my Talon 154CM -- I'm really strapped right now, and finding any cash at all is difficult. But aside from the Rob Simonich design, and great word of mouth here on the forums, Camillus' customer service is nothing short of exceptional.

Thanks for your hard work, and bringing us a great knife at a reasonable price. 'Cause there's no way that I could afford the custom version -- YET!

Sincerely,

Ted

Jehster,
Glad to have you as part of the team! I try to respond as quick as I can...it just bugs me if I know there is a problem that hasn't been addressed! Sometimes I'm on the road for awhile and can't get to the forums, but I try to make an announcement here to let everybody know, and of course I check in everytime I get near a computer while I'm gone. Maybe oneday, I'll get a laptop

Sometimes it seems like there are alot of questions to be answered around here, but I have to keep in mind that we [CAMILLUS/BK&T/WESTERN/CUDA] make a large number of knives. I would feel safe in saying that we make more knives in 1 day, than some knife companies make in a year! And we have been at it for 125 years as of this year

Oh well, one thing about BladeForums, its never boring!

Will, please allow me to pipe up with my two cents as well. Your presence here and the consistent cooperative, helpful customer supportive attitude you have has taken my appreciation of your products and coupled it with appreciation for your company. The result: you've made a fan out of me, not a mere consumer.

Your designs, value and CS cause me to once again say that Camillus is the one to watch.

Well said Nimrod!
