Hello everyone,
My friend recently purchased a Khukuri from the Gurkha house, it is a WW model. It looks good, and it seems like they have some models similar to HI. I'm just wondering if anyone else seen these knives. Are they junk, or just O.K., or knock offs of the HI "s excellent products? Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

BA, it's been my experience that khuks are like just about everything else in life. You get what you pay for. 'Nuf said.

B-A,

If you're going to buy a Khuk, there is only two places to go for something you can really use -- HI and GH.

I will offer that I like my HI's alot. I have also several GH's. The HI has an edge right now over GH on fit and finish, and the variety of styles and sizes. I have chopped with HI and GH both in clearing 2"-4" saplings, splitting firewood and such. Both perform.

HI and GH are run by men who hold their integrity high, if that counts for you.

Broken Arrow,

I have one of each, a HI BAS and a GH Bhojpure. They are about the same size. Both knives are fully functional. The HI is my favorite since I think that it is more beautiful. It is kind of unfair to compare them right now though, since this is the first year that GH has been in business, compared to HI's eleven.

Thanks guys for the information. Also, thanks Uncle Bill for the link to those threads. I was just wondering about these other Khukuris. My friend was ranting and raving about how his was cheaper. My wife boight a 20" HI Sirupati for my Christmas present, at least I was able to look at it before the wrapping. Awesome Khukuri, the fit and finish was excellent. I'm now looking at the HI 25" Sirupati next. Thanks again everyone for the info.

I have nothing against Ghurka House or the products they sell per se.

It's just that Hell will host the Winter Olympic figure skating, hockey /// and speed skating \\\ events before I buy anything from Craig Gottlieb after the way he repeatedly treated Uncle Bill in the past.

Speaking strictly for myself only, Rusty

Note: items between /// and \\\ indicate edited additions to this message. Thank you for reminding me about the speed skating, Steven F.

When I first started coming here I did much the same as Rusty had done and took the time to read most of the archives here and in the old Knifeforums.
I saw enough to convince me to have the exact same feelings as Rusty does.

And like Rusty I am speaking only for myself.

PS - If you do buy from GH, it's no skin off my back. Really!

If you love khuks, then you oughta be here on this forum no matter if you own a Royal Banspati from HI or a gen-u-wine Gurka kukri by the military contractor to India's Gurka regiments ( Atlanta Cutlery, owned by Windlass Steelcrafts of India ), or a tourist khuk, or a Nepalese Khukri House one imported thru GH. You don't even need to own one at all, but access to a khuk helps you understand where we're coming from.

Again, just my opinion, but I'll bet Yvsa feels pretty much the same.

And don't be embarrassed if you bought a POS Tourist Khuk. I only own good khuks, but that's because I learned SEVERAL expensive lessons in buying swords without knowing enough.

I must be reading Vampire Gerbil's posts too frequently. I seem to be ranting more often and for longer.( Gotta blame it on something, couldn't possibly be *MY* fault. Of course not. )

Edit note: forgot - Cold Steel, Ontario, and Blackjack ( before they went under ) also make/made khuks too!

Broken Arrow,

I use, and own both HI and GH khukuri's. I started off with a handleless GH WW model (made my own cherry wood handle) since I was low on funds in the Spring. I had put several hard hours of chopping with it and the blade was very good. If it wasn't for me buying that initial khukuri, I may still not own one. I will only buy Nepal khukuri's.

I read both froums and will continue to do so, both Uncle Bill, and Craig have always treated me like a nephew/brother. Both will back up their products 100%. I don't hesitate to tell people who don't have the initial funds to buy a GH, but if you happend to catch a repaired/blemished HI that is a great buy as well.

Some bad blood could have been present in the beginning, BUT both moderators now DO show respect for each other.

A khukuri is a marvelous tool that everyone should own. It gets nasty strattling this fence all the time....ouch, those pointy steel ones are nasty....LOL.

I have bought only one from GH. I have bought several from HI. You get what you pay for in my view.

Just wanted to throw in my two cents. First, Bill and I treat one another with the respect we both deserve, and I find (as I am sure he does), that we can both exist in harmony, and that we both have the same mission.

There are people who will argue that the "fit and finish" difference on current models is nominal at best, or even non-existant on current models (I have many customers who say that). It really depends on who you ask.

As for Yvsa and Rusty, (sorry guys), you really should not hold a grudge that's over a year old! That's not a flame comment - just the way I see it. If you are as tolerant as Bill is, you should find it in your heart to forgive (whatever it was that I did). Mike Turber forgave me for posting the overly-commercial comments (which was, in most people's opinion, my only "crime").

And as for khukuris and where they come from, both Bill and I have bought from Khukuri House in the past - we have just bought different models sometimes. That's the main reason that I hold issue with the fit-and finish thing.

My philosophy is to treat everybody with respect and when they fail to live up to that respect, I just stop dealing with them. One thing I don't do is candy-coat the substance of my opinions. I say what I think, and if my content offends, I'm sorry.

Exactly.

MAJOR CORRECTION!!!

Himalayan Imports has NEVER bought anything from Khukuri House or any other dealer in Nepal and never will.

All our khukuris are now made in the Himalayan Imports BirGorkha factory.

If Lalit Lama claims that Himalayan Imports has bought khukuris from his Khukuri House in Thamel then all I can say is let's see the shipping papers -- which will be non-existent.

All I ever say about comparison is simply look at the test results and comments from customers who own both varieties.

As a former Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal and one who has been personally involved in continuing volunteer work in that country for almost 20 years I somehow doubt that our missions are exactly the same.

Well, Cliff got the ugliest villager of them all for free because it was so ugly I wouldn't sell it and it ended up beating all the competition, including an HI 18 inch AK. So, in Cliff's case, at least, I'd certainly have to agree.

It's a matter of perspective to me.

(Edit)

I live in a completely different world than most of you and this in the country of my people's origin.
When you go on Indin land you are in a different world with different values and world view and perspective. The "Manifest Destiny" of the U.S.Gubbiment still is in force.

(Edit)

What does this have to do with not buying anything but H.I.Khukuri's?
Everything!!!

(Edit)

There are some like Uncle Bill still helping my people too. They are of the same caliber and are given rights and honors that they appreciate, because they know what those things mean.

Rusty lived among some of us long enough to know that we are human beings too.I firmly believe that he had the respect and love from that Nation he deserves.I know he has mine! I am proud to call Rusty and Uncle Bill brothers.

There are others here that I would consider "brothers" too.

Just gotta say that Uncle Bill's experience in Nepal, connections with the folks back home in Nepal, and extensive knowledge of all things khukuri (in spite of the fact that he will claim to be ignorant) set him apart from all other knife guys I have ever talked with.

Uncle Bill is the man!
