i want to make a small simple propane forge that would be used only for heat-treating steel up to about 3/16x3x4"...do you think i need to actually make an elaborate forge as per the plans i've found on some of the websites, (like Dan Fogg's) or for something this small, could i get by with just a propane torch mounted into a few sections of firebrick? or a piece of 5-6" kaowool-lined pipe?

i guess what i'm really asking is if a simple benzomatic torch in that small an area and with that small a piece of steel is going to get hot enough to get me to critical temperature? or will i need to set up the whole shabang with an air supply and everything?

thanks in advance...

ill tell you in a couple days.

im in the process of building one that has a chamber that is about 2.5'' diameter by 10'' long. im gonna see if a simple benzomatic propane torch is gonna do it. im not planning on forging, just need to get to 1500 degrees for HT of O1. we shall see.

i took a metal cylinder and put a 2'' PVC pipe in the center w/a smaller pipe running out of the center (to put the torch into) i poured in a bunch of refractory cement mixed with pearlite (expanded volcanic rock) we'll see how well it works though :)

Judging from the fire, I would take rough guess and say other side possibly staggered back farther on can lengthwise.

It is doable even on one torch though, guy I bought my torch from(who posts here) had, if I remmeber right, just a simple paint can with K wool, and hole cut in one side for the torch. I'll probalby be doing about same with the torch
