Were the LE's thinner stock than the standard ASH's?

Anyone have a side by side pic of the spines?

Thanks a bunch.

Nice pics.

Just to add, spec-wise--I think these are about right:

Coated CG was nominally .32" thick;

LE was .22" as was the 2007 SE model;

Skinnies are about 3/16" thick or .1875"/.19"

Nice pics, can anyone post one of all three thicknesses?

Whats everyones opinion of the heft of the thickest one. I'm not a fan of coated blades so I was thinking about the LE version, as a user. Is it much skinnier than .25?

you can get the CG in a double cut if you don't like coated blades... So if that's the only reason, don't let it be. You much choose the right tool for the right job, so I think the questions is what is the job? And that's where the thickness matters...

I say go for the thinnest and lightest possible while still maintaining blade strength. In this case, with a Busse, you're already way into the realm of thick and tough anyway. I went with a skinny. At .19" its damn tough and weilds a supremely sharp thin(ner) blade. CGs are built to be thrown at concrete, which you'd never do anyway, and LEs are fairly heavy. For me, it was an easy choice.

...but now that I'm getting a second, I picked a CG fatty! :D

I do not want to disagree but my LE is not very heavy:D

Yeah, I just got a BATAC LE in trade and I just can't get used to the TAC handle and after seeing these comparision pics, I wanna trade the BA for an ASH of some kind. Any takers? ;)

Thanks for all the info!

I've had three LE's and six Skinnies and all have weighed between 15 and 15 1/2 oz. -- virtually the same weight.

Even though the LE's stock is thicker, the convex primary grind of the Skinnies leaves more steel in the blade than the LE's, which are flat ground from the spine. The thicker stock of the LE also makes its tang thicker than that of the Skinny, so the Skinny is just a tad blade-heavy by comparison. As I posted in the thread I cited above, if you lay an LE and a Skinny on a table, the LE will lie flat on its handle with the blade point off the table. The Skinny will tip over and rest on its point.

So balance is slightly different, weight is virtually the same.

On the thickness question between .22" and .25", I notice on the Tank Buster specs that the coated blades are .25" and the satin are .22", which suggests to me that .22" is the thickness of a .25" coated blade without the coating.

As to the BATAC comparison question, I don't know--never had one.

Will,

Good description. I did not realize that this picture shows that. Notice the CG and LE are not tipped forward but the Skinny is?:thumbup:

Good observation--didn't realize that would be true with the front talon as the fulcrum as well. I was actually talking about laying the knives on their sides, but your picture is very illuminating.

Thanks,

Yeah, I never even thought about it until you said it.

I spy some pretty nice sharpening jobs on the coated blades. How long did that take you, and what did you used to do it?
