question on building a propane forge...

not sure if this is the right forum for this kind of question, but here goes...

a question on supplies...i want to build a propane forge as per the plans floating around the internet...i know i can get the regulator and hose from a welding supplier...what about the pipe and valve that the propane supply line leads into? can i get that kind of stuff at a home depot? will they have pipe and pipe fittings that will fit the standard welding hoses?

in case that isn't clear, i'm building the type where the burner consists of a wider pipe that propane flows into via a tiny hole in a narrower pipe...where you tack weld the narrow pipe perpendicular to and over the opening of the wider pipe...my question refers to that narrower pipe...is this standard gas-line pipe that can be found at a home depot type hardware store, or do i have to get it from a welding supplier? and again, the coupling that joins the welding hose to that pipe - is that standard hardware store stuff?

and can ya get just one hose? seems like it's always sold in reels of double hoses, one for air, one for gas...

thanks in advance...

My local Home Depot did not have any of the fittings I needed. Went to an old established neighborhood hardware store that did have what I was looking for. I had to order the 3/4" to 2" nipple even there. But they did have the 1/8" pipe and the brass gas fittings.

Good luck, have fun.

Mark,

I don't know if your building a vertical or horizontal forge, but I built a vertical and have some photos of it. If you would like to send me your e-mail I'll forward the pics.

depending on your area, an oil field supplier with have all the pipe fittings you will need, usually on hand or fairly soon. just my 2 cents

The company in perth is cald enzed it is a hydraulic hose supplier they have all kinds of hose and fitting. Try your yellow pages for a hydraulic supplier if none of the above are cose by.

The other ting is the gas jet I have is shot down the center of a pipe with a larger bellmouth at the jet end. It needs to be adjustable to allow for fine tuning of the gas air mix it can make your forge go from air rich to gas rich. Gas rich can be wastfull if you are on a buget.
I also have some jet pick and forge picks if you need them.

thanks guys...i think i'm going with Sylvester's lead and purchasing a forge kit from that feller...it looks to me like by the time i track down all the sources and scrounge all the materials, i'll end up paying at least $200...for $100 more i can have a kit delivered to my door, with everything tapped and threaded and proven to work...

i wanna do some FORGIN', not scrounging around town for parts!!!

thanks again for your help...
