I just bought a CRKT Crawford/Kasper Large Folder. Not my first choice, but it was only $20 NIB from a local store so I said what the heck.

The scales are black Zytel smooth faced. Is there anything you can do to givie them alittle more grip or maybe even change them out. I know this is a long shot, but worth a try. This knife will be my beater camping/fishing knife.

Thanks!!!

You can rough it up with sandpaper, but it will look like crap. My recommendation would be wingwalk tape.

You could of course send it to a knifemaker who makes such mods and ask him to replace the scales with whatever tickles your fancy. Such replacement scales would be more expensive than the knife itself though...

Use a Dremel and one of the thin disks. Just add a few lines across the handle about an inch apart. If you are careful and measure properly, it won't look too bad. If you intend to use the knife, it might be worth it. You won't get crap for it if you ever try to sell it, however. Your decision. A good grip is important.

How about having the handles beadblasted? There must be some place local that would be willing to do it for a couple bucks.
