I'm just curious as why Benchmade makes the g10 Grips with the open back? Even on their site if you do the custom Grip the g10 one have the open back. Anyone know why? Not that its really an issue I'm just curious. I personally prefer the close back like the regular Grips but think the G10 tan on their site looks great.

I agree with you on this. The open back is one reason I hesitate to get one of the new models in G10. I plan to examine one in a local store before making a decision - to get a hand on one.

I prefer the open design for ease of cleaning, and have always preferred G-10 over plastic scales. Even if it's in the mind's eye I think it looks better. (To me...) And then I sold a few Ritter Grips, years back, in M2 steel...just because replacement scales weren't yet available. Now I regret the whole timing thing. And yes, going to a local dealer to have a look Is a good idea. So much better than looking at countless photos. Agreed!

I guess I just never seen where a closed back was that hard to clean. I never really gave it much though until looking at a lot of modern folders and realized that most have opened backs. Maybe open backs will grow on me. I know I can order custom closed back ones but just think the textured g10 on the site looks sweet.

Manufacturing. G10 is machined instead of molded like the standard handles. If they were to include the small bit of material that closes out the back, the blank (the original piece of material that they start the machining process with) would have to be as wide as half of the knife and then all of the material in the middle machined away. It increases material cost, machining time/cost, and scrap.

Does my explaination make sense?

You can get a backspacer possibly if that's what you like instead of those standoffs

Didnt realise all G10 scales are open back

i prefer the caseback closed, makes knife look more 'fixed' and robust
