Does anyone have any advice on dying camel bone? I jigged and dyed some scales
and they came out spotchy and they were different colors. I would like a nice dark
brown color or a amber color.
I used Fiebing's leather dye. I am not sure if it was the right product, but I had to
start somewhere.
Thanks

Did you clean the bone before dying? I've used acetone and rubbing alcohol with good effect before using leather dye on antler.

I didn't clean the bone before I put it in the dye. I will try
that next time. How long do you leave it in the dye?

I personally like to heat the dye to about 160deg before I introduce the Camel bone into the dye. I feel that I get an even coat and color this way. It opens the bones porous surface to accept the dye. I have a hot plate I use for ferric chloride and heat the dye on it. I buy the dyes in gallon jugs and discard the used dye. I generally soak the bone for 5-7 min before checking, deeper colors need more time.

But, if there is a better way I would love to hear.

Contact Mike at WSSI. He dyes everything. He can sell you the proper dyes for you to dye your own stuff ,too.

i think the fiebig's dye works well , especially the ox blood mixed with brown then heated with a torch after taking out of dye. you could try bead blasting the bone (very fine media) ive had some sucess at this before basically works the same as sanding of course just a time saver.
