question on handles

I'm not really sure about that 3rd slot, but one or two pins, depending on your aesthetic choices, and a good epoxy like West System, Acu-Glass or whatever else is recommended here. that should hold it together for as long as it is used.

You can put a pin through the slot as well. The rest of the gap will be filled with epoxy when you glue the handle together.

For superior handle strength you will want to use epoxy along with peened pins, corby bolts, or loveless bolts etc.

For the strongest handle assembly, use Corby bolts and enlarge the holes as needed to make the shanks fit. (see below for the way to do that)

Use two pins or bolts. One in the slot and one in the hole an inch away from the bolster.

Use a good grade epoxy. West System G-flex or System Three T-88 are two of the best.

Sand the scales flat and wipe off with denatured alcohol before putting the scales on.

Don't make the rivet holes through the scales too tight. They should slip in and out the holes smoothly and easily - not sloppy, not snug. This will allow a little film of resin to glue the pins to the scales.

If you need to enlarge either the slot or a hole a bit, use the cheap diamond drill set from HF. It is a good thing to have in the shop. They are almost always on sale, too.

Use them wet and slowly grind out the holes. They don't last long, but there are a bunch in the kit. Pushing hard or running them dry will greatly shorten their life.

I think it's been said pretty well. I'd go with two pins as Stacy said. It's a kitchen knife, so I don't think Corby's are necessary, just peen the pins. One thing you can do is use the sharp point on a wood spade type bit and ream a slight taper in the holes of your handle material. Use your hand power to do that, you don't need much of a tapered opening. It'll give your pins room to peen out without splitting the handle material.

all very good advise here

i had made one already about 3 years ago , but the scales keep coming loose on the far end side of the scales ,towards the butt area .i think the exopxy i used wasnt strong enough , it was the loctite expoxy from home depot .

i peened the 1 pin closer to the blade ,and thats held fine

bit im gonna try and get the West System G-flex or System Three T-88 or the Acu-Glas , notg sure which yet, though
