Is it possible to use something like a dimmer switch(or something similar)to make a single speed grinder into a variable speed?I know one of the main complaints about lower end grinders like the Grizzly is that it runs too fast.Would something like a dimmer switch be able to slow it down?

No a dimmer switch won't work and like the other schematic shown they work only on brush type motors.Dave:)

Negative on the router or drill controllers also.Only for brush type motors.Face it there is no dirt cheap way to do it.The only other way to do it on the cheap is multi-step pullies.Sorry.Dave:)

Thanks for the replies guys.Thats kinda what I figured, but since I know squat about electric motors,I figured I'd ask to be sure.I knew it couldn't be that easy.

Anytime.I work with electric motors every day at my day job, all kinds. If it was that easy, everybody here would have already done it.:D Dave

If you want to variable speed control a motor ac or dc for cheap find out what you need for your setup. then keep an eye out on ebay and surpluscenter.com you can usually find very reasonable/cheap prices on scr drives(for dc motors) and variable drives(for ac motors). If you need help determining which type/size you need Im sure there are more than enough of us here with electrical backgrounds to help you figure it out.
