Is it possible to braze mild steel onto stainless using a silver rod, I have never brazed anything but have some silver brazing rods and wondered if it could be done, Thanks very much for the help,Charlie

Charlie one of the things about silver brazing is it joins disimilar metals well, clean,
flux, and you shouldn't have any problems. Propane works on small stuff, Mapp is
a little better, if you've got access to it use oxy acetylene.

Thanks alot buddy!! I sure appreciate it. The brazing rods came from home depot, I tried using a mapp torch one time but it didnt do very well, I guess it wasnt hot enough, Im gonna try it with oxy/set torch. Again thanks alot for the info,Charlie

What type of brazing rods do you have? What is the temp range? Did you get any flux? A good silver brazing rod needs a good flux that melts just below the temp of the solder. I do not like flux coatings on the rod. I have a really nice 1100F silver braze and use a paste flux. It is very strong and hold together well for the purposes I use it for. It is not for brazing guards on as its melting temp is way too high. You need a soft solder for this with a much lower melting point. Maybe if we knew what your end purpose was we could help a little more.

Hey CHuck, thanks for the info, Im gonna braze a mild rod to a stainless butt cap for a knife. The rods I got came covered with some blue stuff on them, Im assuming that flux? I know they didnt work well. I even heated the rods up with the small torch for like 5 minutes and it would never run. Thanks buddy,Charlie

Sounds like bronze brazing rods. It may be better if you try to TIG weld it. But then you may not have access to a TIG machine. Another option would be to braze a nut to the pommel the use a threaded rod. It would be better if you get some good silver braze also known as hard silver solder.

I have some nickel silver rods that have a blue flux coating on them. If that's what they are, you'll probably need oxy/acet torch.

probably not enough heat in your welding. and I prefer higher silver contents than most of those "rods" have. get some wire filler metal, with 40-50% silver. those lower 5, 10, and 15 % rods don't really work too well on disimilars.

Call Harris tech, they are a really helpful bunch. Harris Welding Products
