Question on Skeletonizing

I'm just finishing up cutting out my first knife, and have a question about skeletonizing the handle. Are there specific spots to drill the holes so that the structural integrity is not compromised? Size of holes? If it would make it easier I could post a picture of the knife too.

Thanks

Leave the first inch pretty solid. The rest can be severely skeletonized with little effect on strength.

Yep!! also,be carefull not to drill to large of holes.are you doing a bali?drill smaller and countersink deep..,looks good and leaves plenty of strength.

When you say the first inch, do you mean from the closest part to the blade? Also, what about distance to the edges?

Thanks.

No, I'm not doing a balisong.

OT: The reason my name is rpbali is because balisongs are what brought me to this forum. I don't do much with them any more since they are illegal here. Is there a way to change my name without making a new account?

Keep the OD of the hole or the countersink at least the thickness of the stock away from the edge, plenty strong and looks good.

Is this a folder or fixed blade? I'm thinking it's a fixed as it's your first knife. I think Stacy was talking about the first inch under the scale Back from the front of scale.

I like to do a couple of big holes 1/2 inch to 3/4 depending on blade width. About an eigth to 3/16 apart. Then 1/4 holes in between. Like this O:O:O I like to coutersink my holes. I leave 3/16 or so aound the perimeter and about 1/8 in between holes.

I agree with Stacy as long as you leave it back from where the leverage will be you can remove a lot of metal and still have a strong knife.

Just to clear up a couple of things, it is a fixed blade with a ~4 1/8" blade and ~4" handle, depending where you measure from. It is 5/32" O1. I am going to be putting scales over it, so the skeletonizing will just be for weight reduction.

Thanks for all the replies.
