Question on the BUCK CSAR

Read somewhere that the holes are for wire breaking and to turn the valve on an oxygen bottle. I think that was right.

I can see the valve use but every wire I have had to break or cut required putting the tool around it, not over it. I have cut/broke barb wire and stock fencing numerous times with various tools. The only way it would work with the CSAR is to open up the small holes through the spine to slide it over your work.

I see mine more as a emergency tool in a small BOB.

Can't imagine trying to carry this thing in a pocket! :)

I exclusively carry mine in my pocket and love it. My only complaint and why I dont carry it almost always is that it didnt come razor sharp and I cant get the ats34 sharp on my croc stics. Until I get the tri-stone or a lansky and get good at using it, mine will spend most of the time in the display case:(

I will say, mine did come razor sharp, even the front "tanto" part will shave.

I'm in the process of putting together a decent set of bits for mine, more than what comes in those little kits.

to turn the valve on an oxygen bottle. I think that was right.

I started thinking about this and decided to find out. I have 12 oxygen bottles in my garage that are the ones that fit in a small roll around cart for folks on oxygen to take with them. The tanks are 29" long (including the valve) and 4 1/2" in diameter.

I just tried the CSAR's slot in the blade on six of the bottles and the slot in the blade is too small. There's no way it could be used to turn this type bottle on.

DO you have a permit for That? :D

Looks like my CSAR slot

I guess the CSAR slot is smaller than your tanks yet it still does open tank's

The oblong hole in the FDX would be just about right. The one in the CSAR is way too small.

I think the slot on the new fixed blade is for opening O2 bottles. On the folder they more for weight reduction, maybe a gripping surface for opening with gloved or wet hands.

+1 It just won't fit, at least on the bottles I have.

I love mine. I have the folder, carry it every day (I'm Military, with lots of provisions for heavier EDC items). My only question is what angle the blade is set at, for sharpening. I can't seem to find that one piece of information anywhere...

Medical oxygen is a totally different tank than the "B" & "C" tanks commonly used for torching; I don't recall the size of them, but I remember that Buck
had one knife that wouldl fit them...

Dave-you're right, doesn't say Buck on the kit, it's nice but any basic one would work.

Dispatch- I really like the CSAR. It's large. I would handle one if you can before buying. If you like the feel of it I don't see any reason to not go with it.

If you decide against it because of size/bulk look at the Vantage or Paradigm. Both great knives, thinner, lighter if that is what you need.

I picked up a Black and Decker branded 1/4" hex drive socket set for $4 at Lowe's to go with the driver set. 8 sockets, ranging from 3/16" to 9/16" are handy to have as well. The knife is very versatile, as I find out almost every day at work with it. "Unbreakable" comes to mind...
