hmmmm.
Last time I reviewed the sharpmaker manual, I recall it giving instructions to use the 30 . It has been a while.

I just checked the manual and it shows 40. Hmmm. I guess I have been doing it wrong. Thank you for the correct information.

bob_glassman, there is no right or wrong. I sharpen my Mil at 30 and it works just fine for me. It all depends on what kind of cutting chores the knife has to stand up to.
If it is just plain cutting in soft materials, then my 30¤ work exceptionally well. However, if you tend to use the knife in connection to some careful chopping and whittling, then 40 would be just fine

depaul is right! However I think that 40% is probably a much safer bet with CPM 440V.
Then again... Now THAT would be a scary edge!

you are so very right! The edge I usually manage to get on my 204 is truly scary sharp! I´ve cut my self several times almost just by looking at the knife (a small exaggeration...)
Surprisely enough, it holds its edge for quite a long time!?! Don´t really know why but much longer than my ATS-34 Kershaw Wild Wild Turkey at 40. Maybe due to the thicker blade? Both are flat grind.

No no my friend you are righter than I!!!
Seriously, I have heard it said several times that a more narrow angle does not always make an edge weaker. Crazy, BUT... if the resistance is less, you use LESS presure to make the cut and the edge will hold up very well. However if you do not realise that is the case and use the same level of force as a wider angle, then you stand a good chance of spliting the atom
I have a Ka Bar fighter in 1095 at 15 Degrees each side, finished off on the Spyderco ULTRA FINE stone. Bugger me, you could decapatate a T REX with that monster! But blunt it cutting one cardboard box up

Hi Dman. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.
I don't think there is a "right or wrong". as mentioned.
I keep my plain edge Military at 30 degrees, but I am aware that it might be a little on the thin side for the steel. The CPM440V is fairly new and there is little history to know what it will and will not do. I use the thinner angle to test and push the steel for my own understanding.
