First of all I want to say what's up to all the knifeknuts out there. I've been lurking here a bit and my knowledge of knives (not a lot as of yet) has grown since reading some of the topics and their replies.

Now to my question/request, I would like to know your opinion of which Cold Steel Oyabun you would get, the 7 1/2" or 9" blade. It's main objective is to be a home defense weapon and nothing else.

I like both knives' look, weight and grip. The positives of the 9" are, of course, more reach and the Secure-ex sheath. The 7 1/2" blade's wins over though in using AUS 8A steel compared to the 420 sub zero the bigger model sports. Basically, if you can give me your thoughts on why you would purchase one over the other and any experiences any of you have had with either (hopefully more in testing the blade out instead of actual use in home defense).

Thanks in advance.

If it is JUST for "home defense" where it won't ever be used (hopefully), I WOULD go with the 9 incher, due to the increased reach.

Dito on Glockman's advice. If you are going to reserve this blade for home defence only, the 420 stuff, if heat treated properly, will do the job. It isn't ideal, but that is o.k. Just don't use the oyabun to carve a turkey, cut some branches, and then expect it to be in tip top fighting condition! Of course, from the sound of your post, you already know that.

If I were you, I'd carry the 9 incher around the house and practice with it though. The weapon you are comfortable and familiar with is the one you'll want to use in combat. Get used to the 9 incher and it should be o.k.

Too bad Cold Steel is lowering the quality of some of their pieces. Hmm.. a 9" Home Defence Recon Tanto would be nice to have! I should write Lynn a letter
