question re: zt 0630

Aias, I would bet if we were to see the knife as BellaBlades has indicated sans blade, the lockbar would not spring over very much more than it is shown in your pic with the blade in. I understand you not wanting to void your return, but ZT is known to not really care about disassembly, as long as you don't really fudge some things up.

The return goes to an online retailer, and they would want it back as is. Fair enough though.

Hi Aias -

What is the problem? It does not require as much effort to unlock as you think it should?

I am not following you.

Is this your first ZT/Kershaw with a steel lockbar insert?

I don't see anything, nor have you described anything that would lead me to believe that knife is anything but all it is supposed to be.

So I just received my new 0630, and it looks great...

But...

When disengaging the lock I noticed only really light tension from the lock-bar. It is the lightest I've ever felt--I've had a ZT 0561 and I currently carry an sng, both of which require(d) more force to disengage. Even some of my liner locks (Emerson, Spyderco) seem a little stiffer.

Now, I've tried applying pressure to the spine and even whacking the spine on my hand to see if the lock bar moves, and I have not noticed anything. Should I be concerned? Is this design or defect? Based on this one aspect of the knife, I'm on the fence about keeping it. Can anyone tell me if they've had similar experiences, and whether or not they kept/used the knife that had light lock-bar tension.

I know the 0630 is just out; maybe there are some parallels that can be drawn between the 0630 and the 0620?

Thanks

I'm jelly. Regarding the lock bar, you should be alright, if it ever feels unsafe send it in and ZT will take care of you. I like the bladeshape and the steel on that, the handle rocks my world a little too.

I picked up a 620CF - wow - what a knife!

You would love it!

Thanks for the pic, brother! I appreciate ya. Lockup looks good.

If you don't wanna try bending the lockbar, I can understand.

That lockup looks perfectly normal for a new knife. There also is not as much resistance since the lockbar is steel. There is usually more resistance with an actual titanium lockface. For what it's worth, I just got a ZT0620 and the lockup is the same as yours and the lockbar is easy to disengage. I'm not worried about it in the least.

Based on the pic, the lockup looks fine. If it is solid when locked, then I'd say there's no issue. If your preference is to have more tension in the lockbar, then the suggestion of disassembling and bending it over a bit more is a good one. You don't have to bend it much or far. Just push it another 1/4" or so over, hold it there for a second or two, and then release. If you're not comfortable doing so, you could try exchanging it for another with the dealer you got it from.

No--you're following me. Yeah, I'm going by my experience with the zt 0561, my sng, etc... all ti on steel. This is my first zt with the steel insert. Based on all the above comments, I'm going to stick with it. I just put a serious amount of pressure on the spine with my hands and the lockbar didn't move a bit. When I did the same to my Ubr Commander, the ti liner lock traveled to nearly *nearly* the disengagement point. I really do like the knife--at first I thought it didn't feel right, but I've gotten very comfortable with the ergos.

And the fact that I made Rev jealous, well that alone might be reason to keep it!

Thanks guys; I guess if problems develop I can disassemble and tinker, or just send it back to ZT--I know that they take care of their customers.

Again--thanks.

Nice - yes, if RevDevil is jealous..... :D

I looked at the lockup on my 620 and it is identical to your 630 - nothing to worry about - enjoy your knife and go cut something!

Since you are keeping it take it apart! :D
I still want a full shot when you can of the view without the blade. And a view of the whole handle at that. Im sure it is fine, but you may see what I mean, or it is fixed. But I dont think you need to change it unless lock up becomes an issue.
A good excuse to take her apart and get to know her better.
I do love that blade design.

I'm glad you're keeping it, brother! Enjoy it and let us know how it stacks up against your other users.

Late to the thread, but my 0620, 0620cf, and 0630 are all exactly like you describe. It was a little odd at first having to use less force than expected to move the lockbar, but lockup seems secure and outstanding fit and finish in all 3. My thought was that they were engineered this way and not a QC problem. Love the design and execution of this collab.

What do you think guys, time to look at the Emerson hd-7 again? I'm a bit bummed... I was really looking forward to this knife.

Had an HD-7 before and it had issues. The lock stick was incredibly bad and completely moved over to the opposite side in a matter of hours. The lockbar cut out was a HUGE hot spot for me; the edges were rough all around. The corners were just jabbing through my index finger no matter how i held it. If they were to have bevel off the sharp corners like a sebenza it would have been better. I will say that the slightly more curvier handle was more ergonomic than the standard 7.

Just an update about how it all ended up... Don't hate me for this, but I returned the knife; I explained my concerns to the retailer, and they are going to issue a full refund. Besides the lock not feeling right, I found the ergos to be a problem for me as well. When I handled it, my hand felt like it was slipping off the back. The combination of a tapered handle, the rounded end, and my big hands/ long fingers just made for poor grip.

It really is a fine knife, but ultimately not right for me. I thought I owed you all a follow-up and explanation because you were all so good about responding to my questions. Looks like I'll have to find some other way to make Rev jealous!

I like handles with plenty of real estate--TGLB and Ubr commander back when they were new:
